I've been a huge Lord of the Rings dork my whole life, and I'm always a sucker for a Youtube video on the topic. I clicked on one yesterday (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYZHew0xJxM) and was rewarded with some awesome Swedish metal from a band called Sabaton.
I was thoroughly impressed by how well the lyrics described the seige of Gondor through the first stanza, but then was confused by how badly they didn't match in the second... so I started to research this further. I also had no idea what a "Winged Hussar" was. Then I found this video instead (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxlRJsQ7p2k). Same song, different video.
And thus I learned of the 1683 Siege of Vienna, and Prussian king Jans Sobieski leading his hussars across Poland and over a mountain to save Vienna after a 60 day siege by the Ottoman Empire. How Vienna was the "Golden Apple" of Christendom that the Ottomans intended to pluck. And how the Hussars arrived on September 11th to route the Ottomans in defeat.
Now I wonder if the September 11th defeat of the Muslim expansion into Europe is a sore date for them, their failed plucking of a ripe apple, and the motivation for the September 11th attacks on New York, the new Big Apple of the West.
Anyways. just learned about the Winged Hussars last night and thought I'd share. Spartan heroes out of myth and legend, never heard of 'em before. And a cool Norse metal song.

I've had "Then The Winged Hussars Arrive" get stuck in my head once in awhile for years now after first hearing that.
Remember reading somewhere Tolkien had the arrival of the Polish Winged Hussars at Vienna in mind when he wrote the charge of the Rohirrim in the book

King of Poland not Prussia

King of Poland not Prussia
Interesting. You're right, but other references I've seen call them Prussian.
Cool. Still learning more. =)

Did you not know of Saboton? I thought for sure we had mentioned them around here before.
They do amazing True Military History Metal. And their produced videos are pretty solid.
Attack of the Dead Men (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AFdwoyNT24), Bismark (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVWEb-At8yc), Night Witches (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcemHIqmkYI), 82nd All the Way (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgfCUxFE7XA), and Uprising (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_qRfoMLEeQ)
There is also a Saboton History podcast youtube channel. https://www.youtube.com/@SabatonHistory

Hhmm, an interesting idea. Could be.

If you like military history metal, give Iced Earth: The Glorious Burden a spin. Or at the very least, the trilogy at the end of the album, Gettysburg: 1863.

Uhm...
The battle that broke the siege of Vienna happened September 12, 1683...
That wasn't the first siege of Vienna by the Ottomans, either. They had been trying to take Vienna for almost 200 years.
Now, the question is... HAD the Ottomans managed to take Vienna, only to later have it restored to a newly constituted Austria, would De Selby be in here bitching about how the Austrians are forcing the Ottoman Muslims out of their "homeland"?

The Price of a Mile is my favorite Sabaton song:

"Peace to them all (http://gutenbergcanada.ca/ebooks/ebooks/lewiscs-surprisedbyjoy/lewiscs-surprisedbyjoy-01-h.html). A worse fate awaited them than the most vindictive fag among us could have wished. Ypres and the Somme ate up most of them. They were happy while their good days lasted. " --C. S. Lewis, WWI vet,

And while we on the subject of Muslim invasions of Europe lets not forget the Battle of Tours in 732

-
And while we're not forgetting things, let's not forget that the Moors invaded Christian Spain and conquered it in 711 and ruled it for nearly 800 years before Christian forces pushed them back out.
So... who invaded whose homeland?

I never saw that before because I never watched Seinfeld. Never liked him. Wait... does that make me anti-Semitic? So confused...
I was actually expecting a clip from The Muppet Show or something like that.

Yes. This, along with all your anti-Israel posts here, definitely makes you a Hamas sympathizer. =D
