I multitask.  I do other things while dropping a post in here from time to time.  In addition, a large portion of my job is waiting for something to happen.  My systems are stable and happy, as are my customers (happy that is, some aren't quite stable).  It's a mature project, there isn't much going on.

Well some of us don't work 9-5 jobs, so we can post all day until it's time to go to work. I imagine some are retired too. And some of us ARE at work, on ummm, "coffee breaks".

My job has frequent bouts of inactivity.

"My systems are stable and happy..."

Ever notice how an admin's systems are usually the polar opposite of himself? Smiley

It gets even worse if you're doing IT for the govt.  Tasks that can take 5 minutes take days or weeks because of red tape.

I've already over-shared and passed my "whiney little bitch" quota for the week,

but, with rare exception, I am a professional scapegoat, and have large amounts

of spare time on my hands.  Posting here keeps me under the radar and out of trouble.

It's not all day ... I take "work breaks" from time to time Wink

Actually, I'm part-time right now, so I'm waiting for some work to do.  And then I spent a couple hours this morning mowing the driveway.

Time now to go sit on the porch  laugh

I read and post while I'm making calls, filing, filing out forms, etc.  The multi-tasking keeps the noggin active and exercised.

Yep, me too.
Today is a hurry up and wait day.  All the big projects are done, just answering the occasional "OH CRAP WHAT HAPPENED?!" phone call.

Lightweight.   grin

There's only so much literary interest that can be gleaned from watching a massive compile.  Again.  Or watching a test run 50 million iterations.  Again.

Thus, a diversion.

Multitasking . . .

Often I'm running a long optimization on my computer, so while it's crunching numbers I either do some paperwork, hit the lab, or visit APS.

No, I quit my job with the family business, March 1st was my last day.

I have been a layabout good for nothing ever since.

Just recently thought about going out and buying a van and becoming a man with a truck. I'm in HVAC and have plenty of contacts to get the ball rolling. Not sure if I even want to do that.

I can probably make it through the summer without working but the money I set aside for this little break is going faster than planned.

Sometime after next week I am going to make the decision, part time job to stem the bleeding or buy the truck and venture out on my own.

In the meanwhile I'm heading to Florida to visit my Mom and sister.

Many days I will have 3-4 hours of various conference calls. I get to listen to lame excuses about why things are late or going wrong or whatever. When you are building satellites a lot can go wrong. I catch up on work e-mail. Sometimes swing by here. Sometimes work on reports. I just can't do challenging work and participate in conference calls at the same time.

I'm in front of this computer pretty much all day. About 4 pm, I'll take a break to visit APS and THR, then go back to work again for a while, then shut the computer down.

I guess there must be a lot of IT people into guns, because traffic to my website peaks in the afternoon, then drops off in the evening and on weekends. Wink

I work 2nd shift, and like mtnbkr a good chunk of my day is spent waiting for something to happen (like the end of transferring a 4 GB file at the moment).  Things are stable unless the head honcho breaks something.

Ahhh yes.  Short-timers syndrome.  I love that.  Great feeling to be able to look about at all the blood on the floors, walls, ceiling and other operators and say "Gee, what a mess. Poor Jo." rather than getting upset about it.

I start my workday somewhere between 5 and 8 am and end it somewhere between 8 pm and 12 am.  I have a computer in my office which allows me quick access to APS.  I check it out while I'm eating breakfast, occasionally during lunch and again late afternoon/early evening for a few minutes.  Sometimes, I accidentally leave an APS window open and it looks like I'm here all day (and night) when I'm really doing something else.  My job doesn't really have idle time - I have to create it (it's expensive, but sometimes it keeps me from losing my mind and going off on someone that may or may not deserve it).

Don't worry - it's not any s/w that you are likely to see, unless you work on jet aircraft engines.

If I start getting scarce, then you will know I got busy.  In the meantime, I mowed about a 1/4 mile of 12-14' wide driveway today with a walk-behind mower (grass and weeds a couple feet tall).  I also got our colt putting two front feet in the trailer reliably.  Learning to sit a trot bareback, too.  Yeah, I'm just a lazy bum.  rolleyes

My job used to require me to be "on-call" at a computer most of the day.  Most of the time I didn't have any actual work to perform, but I had to be there just in case.  I was a captive audience.

Circumstances have changed and I no longer have that job.  I frequent these forums much less often now that the time comes out of my pocket.

Actually, this is a question Ive wanted to ask ever since wandering in to this termite hill.  Im self-employed as a wandering notary and its been a slower month than usual, bills will be a challenge next month.

Some days are spent within earshot of the computer waiting for closing opportunities; APS is my window into a rational world.  If one can call all of you folks rational that is.  <Maybe not fistful.>

I don't write the operating system, nor the myriad applications (mostly Microslop) that we must use.  Neither do I make the hardware nor set up the network access.  laugh

I doubt the IT guys know an "object" from a "for loop" - but they perform a useful and necessary task.  I was just pointing out that the two are entirely different occupations, regardless of the fact that computers are involved in both.

Uncle Sam thanks me once a month for my many years of service.

I only drive my truck during a 48 hr period every week..600 mi out, 600 mi back.

Our nest is empty.

I post between bouts of reloading, lawn & garden care, channel surfing, banging around in the kitchen, taking a nap, or whatever else strikes my fancy 5 days a week.

Not only may I not be wearing any pants right now, I could be buck naked.  Could also be buck naked while I'm rolling down the highway in my 18 wheeler...there's no law against it.

No, there are no pictures available.

Somewhat, but that's not my particular problem.  I'm a graduate accountant, although not a CPA, so I can find work.  I was fired by CHW in August of 2005 for 'excessive internet usage'.  It was really just an excuse, and the guy who fired me was soon thereafter fired for being totally incompetent. Both my parents passed away in April 2005 and I was having a rough year.

In Oct 2005, I discovered a lump under my jaw, which was not diagnosed as cancer until Feb 2006.  I spent the balance of 2006 in treatment (surgery, radiation, chemo) and am now fully recovered.  I have however started to drink again after some 30 years sober.  So I'm on a sidetrip.

Yeah, I suppose ... there were some things they didn't teach in college when I got my accounting degree (top of my class, 1995).  One of those is that the accounting industry has a special term for "honest accountant".

They call them "unemployed".  rolleyes

I didn't go the CPA route either, because I had a wife and 2 young children and didn't want to spend most of two years on the road doing audits. Sad
