Title: The Third Amendment, in a way I never thought of

It never occurred to me that the qurtering of troops might be anything other than literal, nor did I consider the psychological and social ramifications of said troops.

I'm continually amazed at the wisdom of the Founding Fathers.

Kim really ought to think twice about this one.  Or as many times as necessary.  He's reading a lot of imaginary penumbra that simply isn't there, while ignoring what the founders actually said.  If we wish the second amendment to be taken seriously and read in a common-sense fashion, we'll have to do the same with the third. 

The amendment forbids a forced quartering of troops.  In time of peace.  In time of war, such mandatory quartering must be in accordance with the law.  That's all it says.  Quartering troops is not the same thing as installing surveillance cameras.  Or mandatory govt. inspections for seditious literature or porn or untaxed whiskey, or whatever.  By duToit's reasoning, in-home surveillance (which he makes equivalent to quartering troops) might be Constitutional, so long as war has been declared.  That is, if he actually bothered to read the amendment, instead of speculating about what it could mean.

The Third Amendment is about the only part of the Bill of Rights that's never been questioned or trampled upon. Maybe we ought to have a national Third Amendment day.

I have just been dubbed the voice of reason.  Guess it's time to check for other signs of the apocalypse. 

Any suggestions for Third Amendment Day?  How about the third day of March?  We can have parades through the residential parts of town, where home-owners along the route evict people dressed as soldiers. 

Kim brings up two or three historical instances the founders may have had in mind.  Curiously, I don't think he referenced what would have been foremost in their minds - the Redcoats garrisoned in Boston.  Hmmm.

Did you forget about the Civil War?? The Third Amendment was beaten to death during that war.

Not Kim's best effort, for sure.  OK, it stank up the monitor while it was up.  "S-t-r-e-t-c-h" is gentle criticism.

I met the fellow at a shoot a while back.  Decent fellow, as his wife.  As with many folks, they are more cantankerous online than in person.

I took a few law classes one summer, and other students would ask me what kind of law I wanted to practice.  I always said with a straight face "I want to specialize in Third Amendment cases".  I got some very interesting looks.

So it wouldn't stand up in court.  Interesting take, though.
