Title: Do you need a cycle license to drive a scooter ?
Post by: hexidismal on September 04, 2007, 06:18:58 PM
This came up in a discussion with a friend of mine, and quite frankly I'm not sure of the answer. Neither of us was sure if you could legally drive a scooter ( something like a Vespa with a The 4-stroke 4-valve 200cc engine ) on the public roadways with no motorcycle license. And also possibly no plates/registration. I didn't think that was true ... but I can't be sure . Oh, and we're in NY by the way.

So anybody know the right answer ?

Generally, if it is under 50ccs, you don't need to worry about license stuff... If it is over, they think it is a motorcycle.

And, if the bike costs more than $18,, the new rider thinks he's a "biker."

Sorry, but I had to get my digs in at Harley riders.

You forgot to add that he's watched "Easy Rider" three times.

And he's bought all new leathers... and is wearing boots from the Harley Store that have never seen mud...

Or gravel...

All of you forgot one thing: a real "biker" has to have been to Sturgis at least once. Preferably with the bike in a trailer, so as to keep the bugs off.

I wrote a song called "The Sturgis Song." I wrote it in my head, then typed it up and got it copyrighted. But I'll be damned if I can find a written copy of it around the house.

Anyway, I wrote it in my head while headed back to WI from the western states in late August, and having to deal with all of the HD posers in the mountains who were hogging the turns. I didn't ride all that way to putt-putt through the mountain turns. I wanted to enjoy the challenging curves of the Rockies. By the time I got to Buffalo, WY, I was ready to shoot any HD rider I saw.

So, the following is just from memory, and goes by a Zydeco tempo:

"We're all goin' to Sturgis
We're goin' to tear up that town.
But we don't ride our motorcycles.
We're just going to trailer 'em down.

We'll stand around for a week or so,
Lookin' like real bad men.
But when our wives yell "c'mon home!"
We'll trailer 'em back again.

Now Killer Joe's got a custom trailer,
they painted it orange Day-Glow,
With custom wheels and custom lights,
it always wins the best of show.

It's got a stainless ramp,
air suspension, makes for a cushy ride.
But in all the years he's been comin' to Sturgis,
I never seen a bike inside.

Hammer Claw hails from Rapid City.
Drinks his beer outta rusty pails.
But he don't ride his bike  to Sturgis,
Says it f***s up his nails.

Meatcleaver's an accountant from Chicago,
he's a biker like the rest of us.
But he don't ride his bike to Sturgis,
Comes in on a Greyhound bus.

Dirty Clyde's got a big tattoo
of a woman with bodacious charms.
But he can't stand around in the rain,
or it'll just dribble down his arm.

There's Killer Joe, Hammer Claw,
Meatcleaver and Dirty Clyde.
We got all the leathers the dealers sell,
but we really don't like to ride.

I hope you enjoyed our trailer rally,
and that you'll be back next year.
But please don't ride your bikes to Sturgis,
'cause everyone will think you're weird."

Why I am not buying a Harley. Too much snobbery amoungst who is a biker and who isn't.

I've been looking at BMW and Moto Guzzi, still trying to get over the sticker price of the Beemer.

My wife wants a Vespa (or something similar) scooter, I told she would have to get a motorcycle license to drive it.

Check your state laws for specific requirements. In general, Bogie is right.

Does anybody make an electric scooter?  (cordless)

It sure would be handy around here to go to the mail box or over to the "barn" (about 1/4 mile)

If my legs hadn't been hurting so bad the past few months, I wouldn't even consider something like that. Sad

I know there is one - last time I visited my usual FFL he was fixing one for his wife (in the middle of the store). I didn't think to ask who made it.

I've found that many BMW riders are just as snobbish as Harley riders. I doubt it even approaches a majority, but there are quite a few that won't even acknowledge you if you're not on a BMW.

I could image that also but there isn't a lot of BMW bikes here in central Iowa, It seems like you can't throw a stone and not hit a Harley.

Why cordless?  grin

You might try the Sharper Image catalog for an electric scooter . . . some time ago, I remember reading an article mentioning that they had something for about 1/12 the cost of a Segway, though without the so-called "cool" factor.

Get a golf cart or look into a John Deere Gator.

With my back all messed up and recovering from a recent fusion, I just use my riding lawnmower for getting around. It works pretty well for me. I have a Toro ZTR and a Murray. The Toro supports my back much better than the Murray.

Naw. Just put a Harley logo on it and everyone will think you're cool.

libertarian response:  "I don't need no steekning license to drive anything.  I was born with natural rights to do whatever I want, whenever I want, wherever I want.  The state has no jurisdiction over me, and I do not recognize their authority".

(Note:  this is just before the cuffs are slapped on, and your looney libertarian ass is dragged to jail)
