Iced Earth.
Sadly I can't find a real version of it on You Tube, but Iced Earth's "1776" is the most patriotic instrumental song I've ever heard. This seems to be a fairly accurate cover.

Fat Paw - blend between Pink Floyd and Grateful dead, we saw them in the Grand Targhee bar 5 years ago while I was on a 3 month sabbatical. Never been able to track them down since.
Jackstraw - Folk band from the Portland area.
Big Island Shindig - granola hippy band that can jam like hippy bands can...for hours w/o a break.
Operator - sounds a lot like Soundgarden, pretty heavy and and upbeat instead of that whining "the man keeping me down" type.
Metallica - anything with Cliff Burton (all albums before the Black Album, anything latter is lousy IMO.)
I love most of the classics like Zeppelin, Sabbath, Doors and I could go on ad nauseum. I'm particularly fond of the Grateful Dead and that genre also. All depends on the mood. However, hard and heavy is still probably my favorite genre of them all. But somedays, it just doesn't fit.
Having spent some time as a DJ in college, I could go on and on and drivel on how much I miss that life, but it's gone, I'll let it go.
