Without reading the thread, here I was thinking that your PC finally crashed hard.....

I'm thankful for you that it wasn't the case.

Nope.  Looks like I'm back to functional-land.  In fact, the changeover away from Norton AV to CA's product seems to have given me a tiny speed boost.

It's been a day full of little tidbit time-eaters.  You know, one of these "haven't been able to accomplish much because of all the stuff I had to do" kind of days.  Better now, though.

I had heard somewhere that Norton hasn't re-designed their actual scan engine since 1999.

Don't know how true that is, but it's fun to spread rumors.  Especially when Norton is the slowest AV/Bloatware/Unnecessary security suite out there (Unless MacAffee re-topped them again... they trade back and forth).  Mass-marketing security software to people who don't know what the heck they're doing should be illegal.  Especially when half of that software is already present in the form of windows firewall and microsoft defender.

So let me join you in voicing my frustration at 3rd party "security" products:

AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

Speaking of Norton, I was doing some consulting for a lady Realtor who knew absolutely nothing about computers. She bought a laptop, a printer and a router. She didn't even KNOW she already HAD a router!! Anyways, I set up her system, got her a copy of AVG and installed it. I TOLD her that it would conflict with Norton, but just ignore it and when her trial period of Norton expired, to uninstall it  (or call me and I would). Instead of calling me, she called the Geeks Squad to fix Norton!!  shocked Oh well, I guess if she's THAT stupid, I didn't really want to deal with her. rolleyes AVG has never caused me any problems and it's FREE for personal use. There are other good ones out there, too. Why pay for bloatware when something is out there for free and is better??

www.ccleaner.com

Crap Cleaner. Works really well on cleaning the junk out of caches, tmp files, etc. Also does nice things to clean up your registry files.

www.iobit.com

Advanced Windows Care.

I loooove me some AWC. I upgraded SWMBO's computer from W2k to XP Pro awhile back and had some significant issues with old junk cluttering up the registry and other goodie files. AWC fixed everything, and I've even got some of the folks at work using it on their company laptops and home units. That's not a 'corporate endorsement', but when the folks I work with like it, I'd take it as a secure endorsement. It also cleans up spyware, lets you easily edit your startup apps, and takes out the trash.

Both are freeware. Both update regularly.

Regards,
Rabbit.

I'll bet that before calling Geek Squad she talked to brother-in-law/uncle/neighbor who hadn't heard of AVG but had heard of Norton and recommended that it be fixed. I ran into this all the time working on cars. You could explain everything in great detail about what needed to happen for best results and they'd go off and talk to the brother-in-law/uncle/neighbor-who-had-some-kinda-neat-car-a thousand-years-ago who'd tell them to do the worst thing possible because he'd heard of it sometime, and they'd go do that because he said so.

Then they'd bring it back to you angrily complaining that what you said to fix didn't fix it angry

Perhaps I am fortunate, but generally I get sugah when I ask for it, sometimes even without asking.

Didn't you do this once before?  Identical to this?  I swear, I'm having some serious deja vus.  I was expecting this thread to be res'd from a month ago, but just a few days?  Weird.

Why are you licking the yoga mat, that may be the source of your tension?

Aha!
Yea, well, my memory loss isn't a new thing (nor is my hair loss or my weight-loss-loss).
