Title: Good dinner music?
Post by: Nathaniel Firethorn on March 09, 2005, 04:02:18 AM
Hi, all,

I need to buy some new CDs for dinnertime. What music do you like to listen to?

Thanks,
- NF

Couplea things:

The Ubiquitous dinner music used to be the Buena Vista Social Club.  Nice soft latin music.  If yuo've been out to dinner, especially in an italian place, you've heard it.

My wife likes to play the Cheiftans (being Irish)
Also she liked Ted Hawkins- Cali blues singer, led an almost stereotypical sad blues life.  Makes me depressed, personally listening to him.

Also check out Ella Fitzgerald sings Nat King Cole.

Love, James

I always screw up dinner music and put on something inappropriate.  That is the one area of entertaining that I definitely DON'T have mastered.  I usually just put on the classical station now.

The Kronos Quartet performs Philip Glass is nice mood music.
A CD by The Gotan Project called La Revancha del Tango is excellent mood music.  Has a kind of tango meets atmospheric electronica feel without being cheesy.  It's good stuff and if you've ever seen the movie "Matchstick Men" Hans Zimmer repeatedly rips this album off for the score to that movie.  Also, in Oceans 12 when Bernie Mac is going to the nail salon they're playing a track from Gotan Project.
I think Willie Nelson's "Spirit" or "Teatro" is also good...kinda low-key moody type stuff.

We have a Victoria's Secter boxed set of CD's, featuring nice, soft, and gentle classical music that works well.  Personally, though, I prefer something a little jazzier.  Nora Jones works well.

Celtic music, esp. the instrumentals, is good background music for a dinner.

Avoid bluegrass classics like "Five Pounds of Possum in My Headlights" Cheesy

My children are hungry, my dog needs a bone.
I'm out of a job now, so I'm just drivin' home.
An hour after sundown, when what to my delight,
There's five pounds of possum in my headlights tonight.

cho:

There's five pounds of possum in my headlights tonight.
If I can just run him over, every thing will be all right.
We'll have some possum gravy, oh what a beautiful sight;
There's five pounds of possum in my headlights tonight.

Won't have to clean no chicken, won't have to open no cans.
Just a little bit closer, and I'll have him in my hands.
I think the time has come now, to go from "dim" to "bright."
There's five pounds of possum in my headlights tonight.

Check out Willie & Lobo.

It's a fusion of Cajun fiddle and flamenco guitar.  I know it sounds a bit strange, but it's actually pretty relaxing while being interesting, but without putting one to sleep or distracting from teh meal.  Among my favorites are "Wild Heart" and "Siete".

During dinner and cocktails we usually listen to the swing/big band station on cable.  I know in the other post about "wimpy" music Frank Sinatra was mentioned a couple of times, but I don't think Frank's wimpy at all.  I have to say right now my favorite crooner in Billy Eckstine.  What a  voice!  "Don't Cry" gets stuck in my head all the time.  My favorite dinner CD is Glenn Miller, though Billy Holiday is second.

Nothing is better for a semi-formal/formal dinner than Vivaldi's Four Seasons.

Just catching on? Wink

Seriously, thanks. I've got a couple of suggestions from the list slotted for future purchase.

Shoulda mentioned that I was looking mostly for instrumentals, just to avoid talking over the vocalist.

Candlelit dining, nice wine, it's usually the California Guitar Trio, played through 4 6550C pentode tubes for a smooth, warm sound.  Wink

Ooooh yeah!  CGT is a good choice...probably best that you weed out the surf tunes though for the more formal occasions.   Wink

If your parents are coming over for dinner, don't listen to anything you have tripped-out to while on LSD - especially Pink Floyd's Ummagumma

"Birth of the Cool", excellent choice. Cool

However, as SS recommended, Nora Jones is THE silver bullet.  Guys, it works.  I have not figured it out yet, but Nora Jones works.  Give it a try, you'll thank me later. Tongue

Tried out CD Number 1: CGT "White Water."  Worked well, except for a couple of atonal wierdies near the end.

A little Puccini is always good. I like this one called "Puccini's Heroines".

It really depends on the type of food you serve & the type of mood you're going for...

Italian Romantic: Dean Martin or Harry Conick Jr....

Relaxing Casual: Dave Koz, Dave Brubek, Diane Kroll...

Church Picnic:  Alison Krauss & Union Station, any Bluegrass Gospel...

Let's Just Skip to Dessert: Barry White, Chicago (w/ Peter Cetera), Lauren Gifford ... Wink
