Title: What's for dinner
Post by: sumpnz on August 02, 2011, 12:48:13 AM
I went salmon fishing Sunday and got a decent King and very nice Coho.   [ar15]  After filleting them I shaved off whatever meat I could from the carcass and saved it.

So, for dinner tonight I sauteed some garlin, sun dried tomatoes and red beans.  Tossed the salmon shavings in towards the end.  The served it over a bed of spinach.

A co-worker had gone crabbing over the weekend and caught more Dungeness than he could eat.  So he brought them in, cooked and cleaned, and I picked one up and ate that after the salmon salad.

Almost too bad SWMBO's not here.  Only good part of that was I didn't have to share the crab, or the salmon.

Pizza last night, but we made a run to store today, so there's more to choose here now, and in fact we set the menu for the week.

Tuesday - Ron Swanson Burgers and Onion Rings
Wednesday - Going to Noodles and Co to bug my daughter at work.
Thursday - Lasagna Bites (http://mausersandmuffins.blogspot.com/2005/07/lasagna-bites-range-version.html) (we're going to neighbors to watch P&R)
Friday - Chicken Kiev on a Rice Pilaf.
Saturday - Cub Scout Campout, so it'll be something in a foil pack for dinner.
Sunday - Steaks on the Grill (oh, my switch that to Saturday)

Fajitas, both steak and chicken.  And our guest brought over red-velvet cake balls (http://www.cakeballs.com/) for dessert.  Surprised I didn't die in my sleep.

Last Night and Tonight - Pulled pork (12 hours in the crockpot), Mac & Cheese and a vegetable.

When you haven't got the time to stand around and BBQ the old fashioned way, pulled pork in the crockpot is great...especially when I throw some in the crock pot early in the day before I leave and eat it when I get home on a freezing cold winter day.

I prepare the meat (cutting it into chunks, 1-2" in size and removing gristle and fat), throw it in and pour in the sauce and add what spices I desire and cook for 10 hours on low then pull apart and cook for a couple more...

Tonight it's going to be soup; today, my employer is feeding us - both breakfast and lunch - to mark the anniversary of the technical organization.

SWMBO throws the whole pork loin in and then adds salt and pepper and then adds water till it covers the pork loin.  Delicious!

Um... probably a frozen pizza or a sandwich.

I HATE cooking for one person.

Maybe tomorrow night I'll get creative and whip up some blackened dolphin over rice with sauteed spinache. But that sounds like an awful lot of work.

Think I need to find a roommate who's a chef.

I'm totally envious! Friend of mine who's a professional fisherman (ESPN shows and all) posted a pic on facebook of a really nice mangrove snapper he got in the keys the other day. Beautiful fish! How's it taste in comparison to red snapper? Do you guys have a ban on red snapper in the gulf?

My wife and I are the same way now, and save our elaborate cooking for the weekend.  It was easier to get the motivation to cook when we still had kids at home.

Know the feeling. There's a group of us that get together every Thursday or so and cook a big meal and I swear that's the best I eat all week. I did treat myself to lunch out today and had a huge plate of chicken marsala, late, so that will do me for the rest of the day. It was yummy! Think I might run up the street and have a couple beers, shoot a game of pool in a little bit. So I guess you could say I'm drinking my dinner tonight.

I HATE cooking for one person.

I go for simple, easy to prepare, quick meals vs. elaborate dinners. If they generate good leftovers (for me, that's defined as quick to warm up in the microwave AND actually tastes good once warmed up) that's even better...because it means I don't have to cook lunch...

I also love to grill because it's easy for me to whip up some burgers, steaks, or chicken...there are no pans or pots to clean up

I'm going to see if anyone up at the new job wants to get together to cook a big meal once a week. Sounds like a very interesting idea..

Got a couple fillets from that salmon I caught in the smoker right now.

Dinner tonight was leftover wild turkey and rice.

Going to make a soup with the remains of the turkey carcass.  Just going to scrounge for what's in the cupboard as I'm not in the mood to go to the store.  I have spuds, frozen peas, edamame, celery, and some beans and rice.  I'll figure something out.

I'm going to see if anyone up at the new job wants to get together to cook a big meal once a week. Sounds like a very interesting idea..

About once a quarter, a bunch of teachers from my wife's school get together and do a 'freezer dinner assembly line'.  We shamelessly stole the concept from one of those stores where you pay to make your own dinner, take it home and freeze it.  We meet at someone's house, with an ample supply of wine and beer, and each person brings the recipe, ingredients and packaging materials to make X entrees, where X equals the number of people attending.  If eight people are attending, and you picked chicken surprise to make, you make eight dishes of chicken surprise, pack them into aluminum foil pans, wrap them for the freezer, attach the recipe and cooking instructions and the other people take them home.  So each person walks away with eight different dinner entrees for the freezer.  We have had some really good meals from this, and people like to pick out good things to make and exchange.  We have standardized on making entrees in a 9x13 inch pan size, which is good for one meal for a family, or two to three meals for couples like my wife and I.  Throw in a salad, a vegetable or starch as necessary, and you are good to go.  Most of my wife's teacher colleagues are younger with kids still at home, so it is great to pull one of the entrees from the freezer in the morning and be able to pop it into the oven for 45 minutes when you get home and have dinner ready.

I HATE cooking for one person.

When I'm playing bachelor I just make sure that whatever I cook will provide good leftovers so I can easily heat it back up at work for lunch or the next day for dinner.  That way the time spent doesn't seem so wasted on a one person meal.

I do have room(s) available here at Festung Scout.  Though I'm not a chef, when I'm cooking people don't starve.  And I am somewhat handy.  I 'll probably look again at finding someone to rent a room to.  Surely there is one drama-free non-sociopath out there somewhere.

But there's no saltwater where you live.

And what sumpnz said.

New roommate is moving in here on 15th. I'm waffling. It's really nice having whole house to myself. But will be really nice NOT having whole bills to myself too. Hopefully he's a good cook (every man I've ever met thinks he is) and handy too. Which reminds me, I haven't had the gun discussion with him yet. Really dread this, which is probably why I forgot. He'll either think it's "totally hot that you have a gun!" or he'll think, "OMG, you scare the *expletive deleted*it out of me, put it away!"

Why can't life just be simple? Maybe I should just hide all evidence and keep it concealed. I know, I know, that's irresponsible. Grrrr. Suggestions?

My wife tells me she is hungry for domoda, an African peanut butter stew, so that's what I had better fix.

There are probably as many versions of domoda as the are cooks. Mine is a combination of Nigerian (Hausa) and Gambian (Wolof) influences and includes, among other things, peanut butter, chicken, tomatoes, garlic, and habaneros and is served on rice.

Made a Southwestern risotto: rice simmered in beef broth, southwestern-themed vegetables, tomatoes, cubed pork, spiced with cumin, chili powder, thyme and oregano, and some jarred salsa. Turned out nice, but the pork was a bit too lean. I'll do it again with a braised shoulder cut.

We're sharing expenses, not a bed, so if he thought for a minute he was going to protect me we'd have to have a little "come to Jesus" talk anyway. But no, can't date a guy who has an issue with my guns. Went on a date a couple weeks ago and he actually asked me to leave my gun at home. I said no. We didn't go out again.

Roommate thing however is different. I'll send him an email. Need to discuss the slaying of spiders and pink and blue chores anyway.

I don't require an audience either. I don't LOVE to cook. If I want a steak, I'll go get one and throw it on the grill. Easy and I like my steaks. If I want lasagna, I'm going to the little place around the corner that will cook it for me. May not taste as good as mine, but it'll be cheaper and a whole lot easier! But if you want to make that lemon orzo and chicken with onions, olives and feta for me, I'll let you. I'll even do the dishes.

Never heard of Firefly but I looked it up. Suppose it would be interesting but it would seem there are only 14 episodes and only five of them are up on IMDb, the last four and a random earlier episode. So what do you do with an unfinished story?

Charlene, Vera, neither. I'm trying to keep him around for a while guys, not get rid of him! :) Well, unless he really is an anti, in which case I'm gonna need to find a replacement fast.

It is all out on DVD, the complete set, look on Amazon.  Then you also need Serenity, the movie the "ties" up the loose ends.  Watch the series in the order they are in on the discs not the order they were broadcast, it will make more sense.

Dinner with the gang this evening. Flounder, grits (yes, this is Georgia), and I'm making stuffed shrimp and asparagus.

That is, if the stupid A/C guy ever finishes up. He was supposed to come over here to do a complete service of the unit (clean coils, etc.). Instead he tells me that my power bill is through the roof because I need to change the filter every two weeks instead of once a month, futzed around looking at it for five minutes, stood to close to me and stared at my chest, and still hasn't done what I asked. He went up to Ace and got a new filter and is now back, insists that the coil doesn't need to be cleaned, that the pump is supposed to gurgle for 10 minutes after the unit kicks off (which it seldom does). And he never even went out and looked at the outside unit.

Now he's telling me that a) the coil doesn't need to be cleaned and b) he'll do it anyway (apparently because I'm a demanding female) but can't get to it until next week sometime. And for this I missed ladies night at the range.

Oh, and there is no Mrs P5. Which town?

Lazy pig. We had a service guy out here for our compactor/dumpster lift last week that did much the same thing to my boss. He showed up, spent 5 mins topping off the hydraulic fluid, told us we didn't know what we were talking about the dumpster lift being broken, called us liars, and spent the rest of his time on site hitting on my boss (who's married and said so several times to the jackwagon). Apparently I've upset the balance of the known APS universe today in not being familiar with Firefly. Will order from Amazon tomorrow and watch as soon as it arrives. Am I required to give a report? And Bluestar, thanks for the pic!  =D

Yes....and your topic will be "Why the master of the Firefly-class vessel Serenity is known as "Captain Tightpants"....and why that is a good thing"......

BSL will be grading your paper.....  =D

MrsSmith, we are just giving you a difficult time....it's okay....I really didn't know about Firefly until I got here as well...I watched it and really liked it, although Netfilx has it in broadcast order and not the order it was intended.

Re:  Pig of a HVAC "repair"man.....that is totally *expletive deleted*ing unacceptable.  I hate when you go to an "expert" and tell them what you know is going on and they totally disregard what you have said.

Adively, did you just cut me some slack? Was that a reassuring pat on the virtual shoulder I felt?  =) Thank you. I'll still go ahead and order it. I have some credit at Amazon to use anyway. And yes, seeker, I'll send BSL a report for grading.

As to repairman, he's out. But now do you guys see why I was reluctant to call an electrician about the light fixture? For the same reason I learned everything I could about cars when I was younger. Usually just the fact that I've done my homework and know what I'm talking about is enough to keep them on the right path, but there are some men who think women can't possibly know what they're talking about and I got one. I could have been wrong, the coil may not have been dirty, but the unit is working harder than it should and this is one potential trouble spot. It isn't hot in here, so I'm not uncomfortalbe, but I can't afford too many more $500 power bills either. Just frustrating. Also makes me really glad I'm not a man. I don't know how you all deal with all this "fixing everything that's broken" crap all the time without losing your patience. Every time I turn around lately something's broken and I'm getting tired of it! Of course it's probably from being neglected for so long wihen the husband was supposed to be maintaining things. But I'm not bitter.

How big a house?  I know the wife is bitching about the electric bill because it is too damn hot in Oklahoma.  One thing to maybe think about if you haven't already done so is the putting a couple of turbine vents on the roof to pull hot air out of the attic space.  Also look into the duct work, we have been told that we might want to invest in an additional blower to help push things along due to the size of hour house.  But maybe 280 can chime in, I think he is a HVAC guy and can help with some ideas.

Better study hard. I've watched every episode and the movie more times then I can remember, plus the special features, eastereggs and all the commentaries, read the book, read the comic book prequal to the movie, and have the special edition of Serenity.

Even if you were/are actually wrong about the coils, he could have done a basic inspection to make sure everything is in good repair instead of feeding you a line of BS and leering at you.

We just get it done. Trust me, my whole job consists of fixing everything that breaks, so I have to just go with the flow instead of letting it bother me.

I do get annoyed, however, when all the "retired electricians", "vacationing plumbers", and "former carpenters" hang around the campground at the site I'm trying to work on offering up their "advice" when they don't have a damn clue of what they are talking about. Especially the "retired electricians". Who tell me to "stick a bigger breaker in the box". WTF?

They'll take your pocketbook for a ride without feeling a twinge of guilt, too. *expletive deleted*s...

For what it's worth, my electric bills are running about $400 this summer.  And I *know* that the equipment is operating as it should be (Going to school for HVAC tech.)

It's just 1) hotter then usual here, 2) undersized ductwork, 3) not enough attic ventilation.

Glad I have a roommate to offset some of the costs.

The house is only 1400 sq ft, I do have attic vents, and the house is cool - well, when I'm sitting at my desk working (or playing on APS) in shorts and a light top it's comfortable enough with the ceiling fan on. I have it set on 80 (I know, that would kill some of you) and it's 102 outside right now, so it's doing what it's supposed to do - I think it's actually 81 in here. (When I take the dogs out and come back in it feels like heaven!) I know 20 degrees cooler is about as much as anyone can expect of an older unit. But aside from fridge, laptop, adding machine, radio, and one ceiling fan, nothing in the house is running accept the AC. If I get it checked out - completely checked out, not a halfass job of it - and it's just because the unit is old, then fine. I'll have to figure something else out. But I'm pretty sure my adding machine isn't costing me $500 a month to run.
Avenger - I hear you. I'm sure you probably get a lot of the same thing I get just due to your age. Must be nice to be a middle-aged white guy and know everything, huh? :)

No offense to all you MAWGs here...  =D

Were you in this house last summer? If so, what was the average power bill then? (it isn't like this summer is drastically different than last year in the southeast)

Yes, and with record setting high temps, deadbeat on the couch running every appliance in the house, A/C set at 74, teen son at home with media running constantly, highest bill was $425 - far more usage and over $100 less per bill. Which is why I'm pretty sure it needs to be looked at.

Oh, and almost forgot this:

Yeah, then I think you're definitley on the right track with taking a closer look at the A/C unit.

Just had shrimp in a white wine tomato, basil and garlic sauce on pasta. And I used up the feta cheese and a couple slices of Italian bread.
Now clean up.

Probably something you did a long time ago, but I"ll say it anyway.  Look at your power bill and make sure its the kwh that have gone up and not just the $/kwh.  Costs are "necessarially skyrocketing" for a lot of people.

A few years back when the kids were younger, I'd swear that everything that wasn't falling apart was being actively destroyed.

Yep, this.  One thing you can do is make check see that there are a pile of leaves or millions of dead bugs or a bunch of trash in the outside unit.  If you have an air compressor (I know I'm taking a big leap here) or simply a garden hose and clean out the coil yourself.   Then if it's a problem, well, I'm out of ideas.
