Title: The origins of HIV
Post by: MillCreek on February 28, 2012, 11:05:20 AM
http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/colonialism-in-africa-helped-launch-the-hiv-epidemic-a-century-ago/2012/02/21/gIQAyJ9aeR_story.html

A really interesting story in the Washington Post, tracing the origin of HIV back to Cameroon and the first jump of the virus from an infected chimpanzee to a human around 1890-1910.  The hunt for ivory and rubber in Africa then created the economic and transportation infrastructure that allowed HIV to spread beyond the remote jungle.

I will have to look for this book at the library.

Of course its not the IV drug users and the promiscuous responsible for the virus' spread, its because of eeeeevil  right wing capitalist ivory hunters. See! the 1%ers were killing the 99%ers even 100 years ago11111!!!!!!

Actually, what I found most interesting was tracing back the origin of the virus in the human population even further back.  Last time I read about this, it had been traced as far back as 1959 based on stored blood samples. Also of note is that improvements in transportation infrastructure at the beginning of the 1900's allowed spread of the virus.  The same arguments that have been made today with the spread of bird flu or SARS via air transport and the further spread of HIV in Africa back in the 80's and 90's along long-distance trucking routes.

If you haven't seen the movie Contagion, watch it.  Good SHTF scenario as to how something can quickly spread and get out of hand.
