Title: Facebook Gun Discussion Rules?
Post by: Ben on May 25, 2017, 12:13:53 PM
For those of you on friendface, have you run into this? I just heard it discussed on Fox Business. They were saying that apparently Facebook is issuing new guidelines on gun discussions. Examples were that if you post a pic of a firearm with no comments, you're okay. If you talk about guns related to hunting, you're okay. If you post a pic of a Glock 23 and say, "I want to add that to my collection." you are then liable to be censored.

Any truth to this, or have any of you seen bias in that regard?

That is not the current policy at Facebook, in my experience.  I follow dozens of gun companies, pro shooters, and discussion groups and have rarely seen anything censored.  One thing that will get a user in trouble is trying to buy or sell guns or ammo on Facebook.

As I recall, they farm out their content censoring to india. So, it all depends on who in India you get and how well they understand english.

related question (and something I've been wondering)

Does FB have some method to find these posts outside of it being reported to them by another user?

Not that I know about.

Not that I know about.

I wonder if they do though? The other thing I keep hearing about is that they have hired literally thousands of people to monitor their news and video services for "fake news" and" inappropriate content". If they're already doing that, it's not hard to throw in whatever the facebook discussion section is. Algorithms will easily pop up anything firearm related for review.

I'm a member of "The Reloading Room"  No discussions or offers on sales, but all kinds of gun and ammo posts.

Same with some of the veterans groups I'm in.  Lots of gun discussions (not just what was used in the military, but also current carry pieces and other firearms.)

I've seen people selling guns in other places, but called other things so as not to attract the attention of TPTB.

Okay, that appears to be what Fox Business was talking about.

While "desire to purchase" could be viewed as someone asking to buy a gun, it doesn't appear friendface would only use that as the criteria. It appears to be wide open to interpretation.

The hunting one is just as disturbing. Fox had talked about hunting being okay, but it appears that may not be the case.

Funny,  I thought I saw a few years ago that Zuckerberg was getting into harvesting animals "to connect to the planet".

I just realized something and I wonder how on earth it fits into FB gun community standards.

HK is having a magazine sale on their website, buy two, get a third free and if you comment and tag a friend on the FB post where the sale is advertised, you're friend could win a hat.
I haven't looked but I'm betting that Springfield, Glock and the other companies I follow on FB are also having memorial day sales and giveaways that they are advertising on FB.

So, are they going to do away with the gun companies who have FB pages?

Depends on how much money the companies give to FB for advertising.

I don't think HK spends too much on advertising... They don't even bother to make sure the rounds in the magazines are in right for print ads.

If Robert Farago told me I was male, I'd reach down into my pants to double check...

Well, according to your name.... you might want to check.

Well, according to your name.... you might want to check.

With THAT particular name, there's still MUCH room for doubt!

Now, Amy.... tsk-tsk-tsk.

That whole business has got to be confusing to our new or newer readers. I've got no real gripe about it, but just for the sake of communications, I think you could think about dropping that little joke.

Besides, if you can have two screen names, why can't everybody?  What a mish-mosh that would be.

Would you leave Amy alone? It's not her fault she's just not funny. It's the fault of those nasty privileged white men.

I think we've done the name change prank before on April the Oneeth.  Great Fun was had by all.

Besides, RevDisk stated my name change "Freaked everyone out".  Since I presume that everyone included him, I was able to mark off "Freak out RevDisk" on my Bucket List (and I will admit I figured that one as the absolute hardest one to complete.)

And besides, my name change was the end result of what you started, so there.  :P :P :P :P :P

This.  "Add to my collection" makes it sound, in very literal english, like you're looking to buy it.
