So apparently photobucket now requires you to pay for an account to hotlink the pictures you upload.
Anyone have a better free site that doesn't throttle hotlinking?
-
Where have you been? They started with this on June 30, and the Internet has been ablaze with invectives aimed at Photobucket. It's not just that they want you to pay to keep third party hosting. Their other paid plans don't even allow it. They came up with a new plan that costs $399 a year, and that's the only plan that allows third part hosting. Rapacious bastards.
Possible alternatives:
Tinypic [Owned by Photobucket]
Flickr.com
Imageshack.us
Imgur.com <See post below. Imgur does not allow 3rd party hosting>
postimage.com
ImageVenue.com
FreeImageHosting.net
Canon Irista
A lot of people seem to be migrating to Imgur. I don't know why -- I looked at their site and didn't like it, but I tend to be contrarian that way.

Then again, they're pushing "net neutrality." ;/

If you have Amazon Prime, you get free unlimited storage of photos included. You can hotlink from there.

Picture Trail works well. Pretty easy to set up, and at least for now, still free

You're welcome.

I've been doing some linking out of my Google Cloud backup.
It works, but is a little non-intitutive at first.
-
Oddly enough, all my links to Photobucket here and elsewhere are still working.

Chris
Mine were until earlier today. I first saw the stupid speedo error pic on others posts yesterday, and mine were fine. As you can see now mine stopped working.
They might be doing it in waves.
I'm told google pics is decent if you already have a google account. I'm still looking at the choices. Gotta go look at Amazon, I didn't know they hosted pics.
-
Apparently Photobucket is doing this in a relatively slow roll.
We've had more and more people complaining about it at TFL. First they say their pictures are still showing up, and then a few days later they aren't.
I'm hearing from a friend who works closely with Photobucket somehow that the defection rate they're seeing is FAR higher than anyone thought it was going to be.
-
Ahh, good point. Well, once mine stop working, I'll find an alternative. I don't tend to maintain images there long term, so it's not going to harm me. I'll just delete the files and start clean somewhere else.
Chris
-

This part surprises me. WTF did they think was going to happen at $400/year to keep the service? They obviously don't understand their market or their place in that market.

Mine were, too ... until yesterday. I finally received "the e-mail" notfying me that I will have to pay to play.
Except that I don't. I'll migrate my few hosted photos to some other site, re-link, and delete my Photobucket account. As Jamis stated it so eloquently in the title of this thread, "F off, photobucket."
-

If this is true, they are morons.
With the number of members they have had, if they had decided to charge $10/year they would have brought in about $1 BILLION dollars a year. Did they seriously believe that people would just happily pony up $400 a year so they could have a dozen or so images show up in old discussions on some web forum somewhere? What the hell were they smoking?
-
Just nuked my account. I was waiting until they got to me too. LOL... some/many of you may have Bug Eye'd Earl from Red Meat cached, but it looks like even my Avatar here was hosted through PB. Hit F5 a few times to see if it changes.
I'll just go figure out how to use my Amazon Prime space.
-

Chris
From what Sam was saying there was the thought among the management team that people had become so dependent on PB for things like hosting photos to Ebay and other auction sites that they'd be more than happy to fork over the $400 a year just to keep from having to relink all of their active sales and learn a new site for new sales.
That's apparently not working out as they had hoped, and they have so far lost FAR more in people from the lower-use, smaller paying accounts leaving than they've gotten with people signing up for the new plan.
I agree, it doesn't make much sense at all because it guarantees you're going to lose huge number of casual hosters.
-
Oh, and when I say "anyone," it was apparently management's theory that people would open their wallets in droves, and the employees with whom Sam works are WTF??? From what he was saying, it basically wasn't explained to employees until AFTER the spit started hitting the spam.
I've seen on a number of other forums where people are talking about this that they've tried calling the HQ in Denver repeatedly, and the phone is always busy.
-
I went through my PB account when I got the email a week ago, pulled everything down that I didn't already have, deleted the rest, and the only pic left on my account is a copy of this (https://imgflip.com/s/meme/1950s-Middle-Finger.jpg)

My guess is that in a month or two they'll realize what they've done and try to roll out a bunch of tiered packages in which you had have X number of 3rd party hosts for X dollars a month...
And by that time, it will be FAR too late to recover even a smidge of the good will they used to have and they'll end up amplifying their ever steepening death spiral.
-
Sigh... apparently Amazon Prime photospace won't give you clean image file links that end in .gpg .gif etc. so they can be rendered with IMG tags.
Imgur is off the list right out. They say in their terms of service that using them for linking to forum posts violates their TOS, even though everyone does it. And Imgur has been quietly engaging in SJW fights with various right wing and gun boards, so you have to add an extension or monkey with your browser's HTTP referrer settings to prevent them from seeing the website they've banned.
I guess Flickr is next...

I know a photographer who likes and uses Smugmug. I don't know anything about their plans, but they're chatting up angry customers in PhotoBucket's Twitter feed.

Yes, I am petty.
A friend told me to do the same thing. The problem is that the images are still on their server, so they can still get hits to them from other people's Internet searches, and they can still rent or sell your photos as long as they stay on the Photobucket site. I've considered it, and my decision is that when I've gotten settled on an alternate hosting site, I'll delete my images and delete my account.
-
Where do I get the raw AWS hosted link, and not the one routed through amazon.com/photos? ???

Exactly. I've been getting nasty emails from them over it.

Our Boy Scout Troop has a Shutterfly account. Adults post pictures from the Outings, anyone with the Troop can view them, and we only use a couple of them for our Bi-Annual Courts of Honor brochure.
Other than that don't know much about it.
My Photography skills consist of "Oh, that would have been a great picture..." Then me grabbing my phone after the moment has passed..
-
And yet another operation run by whiz kids with MBAs has initiated a self-immolation protocol.
I've been pulling stuff off that I don't have a backup of handy for a few days now.
Once I'm done I'll send them a FU note and delete the account.
-
well, I knew nothing other than I couldn't get it to work for an upload the other day. Now I guess I know why.
Just ran through and salvaged what I wanted, then deleted my account and the app along with a message that asked them if they knew they had just destroyed themselves.
*shrug* I guess I have to figure out another hosting site. I'll probably use the Amazon.

I don't use a hosting site, just attachments and third-party I M G links. I expect a few of those will go away.

My links to PB just started this nonsense this evening while logged into APS. No notification email, however. Checked back several weeks on the account they would have used.
I'll have to clean out my account it looks like. It may be pretty easy, though, as I still have originals of anything important.

Photobucket has been going downhill for a while. The interface has become way too script-heavy over the last 5 years or so, and as a result is a PITA to use. The only reason I kept using them was because I had so damn many images uploaded to it that it would have been a pain in the ass to abandon and start over.
I guess they just made the decision for me.
Sayonara, pendejos.
-
For linking images on forums and stuff where the images are fully accessible to the public, I just have a throwaway yahoo account and use Flickr. For general sending to family and online storage, I've been using Google, but need to check into Amazon Prime.
One thing I don't like about Google, is it keeps turning on synch on my phone, even after I have turned it off, which often makes my gallery on the phone lag.

Same here. I just finished deleting my account after pulling down a few dozen older pics I wasn't sure I had a readily accessible local copy of.
I let them know why in the comment box, not that I expect anyone will ever read it or care if they do.

The Denver-based service was founded in 2003. The company says it has more than 100 million users.
I wonder what the current number of users really is after they shot them selves in the crank.

At some point, for some reason, their navigation broke in Linux Firefox. Getting a direct url to a jpg became an excercise in frustration.

Yeah, they don't have a clean policy on the matter. As long as it doesn't come to their attention, they don't care. It's not a bastion of SJW's but some of the staff clearly lean that direction. They're based on SF, so SJW is their version of "center left". But likely someone in the management likes money more than ideology, so they keep it as invisible as possible. They shadowbanned trigglypuff for a while.
I link off my own server, but I might be looking for a different service myself. I have a business google account, I assume they have some solution. They don't just throw in the kitchen sink, they throw in an entire industrial kitchen's worth of stuff for $5.

I synch my photos to MS OneDrive be cause I already pay for a gaming acoount with them so the photos storage is included. I don't know if I can hotlink to it. Time to go try.

Why the hostility toward photobucket? The gravy train had to end some time. I don't see how they have done anything wrong here. Somewhere, there is a board meeting that's going something like this:
"Well, we lost 395485 millionty users, and the entire Internet hates us"
"And?"
"we are actually making money..."

Well, if you'd actually been reading the thread, you'd have seen that there's a great amount of angst with the way this WASN'T announced. The TOS were changed, but to find out about this particular change you needed to drill down multiple levels into their user agreements.
Then there's also the fact that PB has apparently made it exceedingly difficult to get your photos off their site if you no longer want to host them there.
Then there's also the fact that apparently little to none of this was discussed with PB's staff before hand, and the people responsible for responding to the users, even the paying users, didn't know what to say when the complaints started rolling in.
