Title: US APS Members Who Will Need a Passport to Enter the US
Post by: Ben on October 17, 2017, 09:06:19 AM
Looks like those in nine states will need a passport for domestic flights in the US starting next year. I was surprised CA is no longer on the list.  I know there was a problem because of the whole illegal alien driver's license thing, but it looks like it has been fixed.

You should hear the wailing and gnashing of teeth here in WA from people that are finding out about this just now. It's not like the state has had over a decade to fix it. Instead of directing their anger at the Feds they should be directing it to the state people who thought they could keep getting extensions.

I do love that the article does not point out that these states are effectively the only states without a de facto national identification card.

From the fact that California is compliant, I'm strongly guessing any section impacting illegal immigration is no longer effective. Which was the original argument. With terrorism also mentioned as an obligatory pro forma.

Have ID.  Will travel.

I still dislike the whole idea of having to identify myself just to fly.

It's not unreasonable to check the identity of someone actually operating a half a billion dollar potential cruise missile.  ;)

Checking my ID is fine.  Checking the ID of the peons is just silly.  TSA does a perfect job of stopping all the bad peoples.

And "half a billion dollar" plane?  You must be a buyer for FedGov.

It's worse than that. He supplies to fed.gov.

From what I've heard, and I haven't flown since long before I got my carry permit, airlines do not accept those as ID, even if they have a photo on them. So why should they accept driver's licenses at all?

Honestly, I have no idea what costs are on the commercial fixed wing side are. And again, all depends on how it's all counted. Any maintenance or warranty costs. We can definitely make the numbers say whatever you'd like them to say.   =D

Looked it up, basic airframe is $100m per unit.

I'll give you $125m if you throw in a F35.

They probably have a tiered license system.  My driver's license is not RealID compliant despite the fact that I could (and may have to) get one from my state.

Remember, I worked mostly with head of state and billionaire airframes. Or oil rig service companies buying a small fleet of ultra rugged flying sardine cans. Or SAR. Or weirdo off brand gun ships. So 'normal' costing is beyond me.

And no, I'm not stealing an F-35. I was only contracted to steal an aircraft once, and I'm 95% sure it was a legal repo.

Who said steal?  There are many F35s getting pushed aside and forgotten.  The Marines probably can't count all of them anyway.

Not sure where Esquire got their info but I count 23 states as Under Review. None show as straight up Not Compliant.

All they need is more than 20 for that.

Last I knew, my state offered a choice between RealID-compliant, or not. The RealID version cost a few bucks more, IIRC. I don't remember which I got last time I renewed. I think there was some documentation they wanted for the RealID and I didn't care to be bothered finding it, so I think I chose non-compliance. I can always use my passport card.

If I ever fly again. Which I hope I never will. (Except if I accept an invitation to visit Greece. It's a long swim, and I can't get to Greece by Hertz, Avis, or Amtrak.)

MN charges $15 extra for a Real ID compliant drivers license.  My license is up for renewal.  Not sure if I'm gonna pay for the upgrade or not.  It's not the $15, it's the principal.  OTOH, if I don't and I have to fly after January 2018...

I need to see if I can score a business trip to Detroit or Dallas again for after Jan 22, unless the India trip is a go.  That way I can get my employer to spring for my passport fees.

Ummmmy.... yummmmy.

But an expensive date.  Supposed to go down to US$85M a pop after a while.

Ticks me off that my Carry Permit is vetted about 10X my driver's license, yet I can't use it for ID.  On the other hand, my social security number, which is or was not supposed to be used for ID, is required by every piddlyfarty jackass in the country.

Did I say I was ticked off?

If my driver's license isn't RealID-compliant, I suppose I need to start carrying my passport card on a regular basis. Or, at least, any time I travel out of state.

I need more pockets and another wallet. With things like a couple of credit cards, an ATM card, driver's license, carry permits from multiple states, AAA card, my state-issued ID as a licensed building inspector, VA healthcare system card, Medicare card, private lealth insurance card, Sam's Club, BJ's, and a few more I can't think of at the moment, I'm already carrying three wallets and they're all too stuffed. This is getting ridiculous.

Unless your cards are on your keychain or in your purse, that's impossible. I just checked- 4 credit/id cards are 1/8th of an inch thick. thirty cards would be ~1 inch, unless you have a large wallet that puts them side by side.

The height of my wallet is 4.5".  The folded width of my wallet is 3.5".  The folded thickness of my wallet 0.5".  Just measured with my handy dandy Stanley FatMax 25' tape measure.

To my dismay and everlasting shame, I don't think I'll live long enough to grow enough hair to sport a "m'un." (Or a pony tail, or a Mohawk. If I were to try for a "high and tight," it would come out sort of like a "mid-level and sporadic.")

With the rise of "Loyality Cards" and the like, I've taken to carrying only my DL, LTC/CCW, Insurance cards, one credit, and one debit card.  (8 total) in plastic pouch I got from Gander Mountain that was designed to hold a hunting license or two,  (Two clear plastic sleeves big enough to hold a drivers license or credit card, that then folds in half.)
