Title: Films you need to show your son/daughter
Post by: T.O.M. on November 15, 2017, 10:46:15 PM
The Dirty Harry thread and comments set me to thinking.  I've got a 17 year old son.  He's a senior.  Almost an Eagle Scout.  Applying to the Naval Academy and NROTC because he's decided he wants to serve his country.  Anyways, Christmas break is coming up in about six weeks.  I think it may be time to give him homework, films he needs to see.  Writing about Secondhand Lions got me thinking about it.  So, here's what I've come up with so far.  I'm looking for other ideas as well...

Secondhand Lions
Tombstone
Open Range
Blackhawk Down
Lone Survivor
The Long Grey Line (because I'm Army, to the core)
The Great Escape
Men of Honor
To Kill a Mockingbird
To Hell and Back
Patton
Men of Honor
Schindler's List
Saving Private Ryan
Band of Brothers

I know I'm missing a bunch.  Help me out.

The first half of Full Metal Jacket.

Might add PT 109 and The Sand Pebbles.

Edit - Huh, didn't know that Richard Attenborough was in The Sand Pebbles.

Lawrence of Arabia
Casablanca
Some of my favorites are contemporary films about WWII, made during the war or shortly after. Fascinating glimpse into how that era saw the purpose of entertainment and how they saw the struggle. Can't think of any titles offhand.

For the kinds of films I think Chris is looking for, that I think embrace "the speech":

Fort Apache
The Seven Samurai (subtitled, not dubbed)
The Grapes of Wrath
Our Vines Have Tender Grapes
Treasure of the Sierra Madre
Stagecoach (John Wayne version)
The Big Trail
Tears of the Sun

Spartacus (the Kirk Douglas version)

This film also needs to come with the education that the screenwriter for the film, Dalton Trumbo, was blacklisted at the time because he would not testify for the House Un-American Committee. He continued to write under other names until Kirk Douglas publically stated he was the screenwriter. President-Elect JFK crossed an American Legion picket line to see the film, which helped end blacklisting.

As Paul Harvey would say..... T-T-T-T-That's all Folks.

;)

End of drift.
