Title: Classic Shell is Dead
Post by: Ben on December 04, 2017, 10:20:25 AM
Well, this is a bummer. I only run Win10 on my travel laptop, but even after a few years of using it, still prefer the classic shell menu over the Win10 menu.

Apparently even the most recent version of classic shell will not work past the next Win10 update. It's actually one of the reasons the author is giving up - too much work keeping up with Win10 changes, which break classic shell (and apparently many other third party prgs) at each update (at least according to the article).

Kind of a bummer if MS is actually going in a direction that makes it harder to write and run third party prgs. That has always been one of the reasons I have preferred Windows over Apple OS. Give me choice and I'll take the responsibility if a third party prg breaks something. I hate to see them going down the "lowest common denominator" user road as Apple does.

Bummer.  But, I'd never used it until Windows 8/Server 2012.

I'm so glad there's Xubuntu (and now Ubuntu-MATE) so I'm not stuck with Unity.   :P

Major bummer.  I've been running Classic Shell on my Win8.1 machine from day one, cannot abide the new Windows interface at all.  I like some of Stardock's products (been a customer since the days of OS/2  :old: ) and run some the their enhancements on my Windows machine.  May have to look into their replacement if the current machine dies.

I don't mind using OS X, and use it on my laptop PC (MacBook Pro).

Open Shell lives: https://www.techspot.com/downloads/7103-open-shell.html

A group has picked up Classic Shell and ran with it. They had to adopt another name due to some sort of trademark or copyright dispute.

Cool!   Thanks for point me to that.  Will try soon.

Classic Shell, Open Shell - wouldn't Hard Shell be more appropriate?  :P

What a relief. Classic Shell is what makes Windows 10 tolerable. A pox on Microsoft for breaking it.
