No problem.  The thieves must have an ATF explosive license of some kind, right?  So they can just run through the list of licensees until they find the stuff.

Too bad about Craigslist, I could use just a pound or so of that, just for emergencies.

Their has been a lot of protesting of various pipelines in PA. It may be that this was something to do with that, this could have been someone stealing this to try and shutdown the pipeline building for awhile. Even the video attached to the article is from someone against the pipelines, but they don't seem to actually make the connection in the article to this possibility. It could also be someone just wanted to steal explosives for a nefarious purpose or not, but it would not surprise me if this was more of an attempt to sabotage/shutdown the worksite.

How do blasting caps work?  Do they get pushed into the dynamite and then ignited with an electrical charge?  Are they safe to handle?  Did Butch use enough dynamite?

Asking for a friend.

No. Blasting caps actually contain a captive, sleeping elf. The electrical charge shocks the elf in the lucky charms, which makes him mad enough that he starts thrashing about and that's what releases the magic smoke from the dynamite.

600 pounds of dynamite left on a remote pipeline site in PA over the weekend?
Meth heads... Just sayin.

I'm laying my bets on it being a 100% inside job.

. . . Either the Amish are going fishing . . .
I haven't been fishing since they tightened up on dynamite sales after 9/11.

(strictly speaking, that's true . . . although the two aren't actually related. )

What is typical for secure storage of explosives?  Is leaving it in a locked trailer for the weekend normal?

I have a friend who blows *expletive deleted*it up for a living.  I'll ask.

I'm laying my bets on it being a 100% inside job.

I won't touch that bet. That was my first thought.

Especially since there was purported site "security," and "security" conveniently didn't notice that the trailer doors were open until Monday morning. Great job, guys.

Thanks.

I was waffling between the best security being no one knows it is there and the fact that everyone working there knows already (and all their friends most likely).  About all they could do is hire people to hang out at the site 24/7 unless they take it to some other location.  I would think any work site like that would be a target for thieves looking to steal tools and such.

Makes me think I need to brush up on the ATF rules for storing NFA items also.

I did not catch that fact in the story.  It could also just be that the site "security" spent a lot of time napping in their truck (or left the site) and pencil whipping the paperwork.  However, inside job is just as likely.  I know of enough examples of that.

They said "dynamite," but are they still using that nowadays?  I thought everything was ANFO and detcord today.

I'd almost be more concerned about the blasting caps.

I have a friend who blows *expletive deleted*it up for a living.  I'll ask.

Yeah, ask him about the "dynamite," too.

Depends on security's orders; I've worked a site where we were technically "securing" several parts of a building we weren't allowed to enter without a client escort.  And when I say "we" I mean one guard per shift.  So if someone managed to break in through something other than one of the direct entrances, (like, for example, going through the attached captive smoking courtyard, or the attached captive trash area) it's entirely possible it wouldn't get noticed until the next normal workday.

My friend who blows *expletive deleted*it up professionally for a living says something is fishy.  He said constructions sites are "product in, product out", and also that just that amount of detonators is bad juju.

Yeah, I figured that, too.  Me: "I'd almost be more concerned about the blasting caps."

Thanks.

Let me just say that there is one particular APS member in that neighborhood who...probably knows the most of us about explosives
