Title: Skylight reshaping
Post by: Brad Johnson on May 20, 2018, 09:40:56 PM
... via Mother Nature

Came home from a weekend trip to find this. Entry skylight. Inner lens still intact so thankfully no debris or water in the house.

We got 2" hail here in the 'hood. Just down the road a stretch they were getting stuff over 3 inches.  Roof is toast but still have all my windows and the truck was in the garage so it could have been a lot worse.

Rain was nice as we're in a serious drought. Just wish a bit less of it had been in solid form.

When hail took out my roof about five years ago, I had them take out the skylights. Damn things added light but also a bunch of noise during storms.

We had two rounds of hail this morning but only about 1/2-3/4 inch.

I hate to think about peoples' solar panels in stuff like that.  How do homeowners' policies usually handle that kind of damage?

I wondered about that the last billion-dollar 2-3" hailstorm we had, but never pursued it.

I used to work with a guy who always said that skylights are holes in the roof to admit water.

Case in point ...

Got the adjustment paperwork. $13k in total. Roof, gutters, and garage door ( i saw a few dings but closer inspection showed a lot more damage). I got lucky and didn't lose any windows.

Seems like a low amount.  Can you fix everything for that price?

It should buff right out.

My palatial estate is a garden variety 1640 sq ft ranch style 3/2/2 so it's about right. Garage door is a generic 16' four-panel affair. Hipped roof with plain old asphalt shingles, 36 squares total with about 50 linear feet of guttering.
