This is something I hadn't heard of, but it's a great idea. If you have kids, work out a code word so that if someone other than a parent or known relative has to pick them up, the code word is the signal that it's okay. It just saved an Arizona girl from being kidnapped.

Huh. I had one of those. Mine was a simple phrase.
And I did have a similar incident as a child. A detective got all the details they could from me, because the dude in the van tried to pick up kids from several schools.

We did that with our kids a long time ago.
Our code word/phrase was "Fred Biletnikoff sent me"
The name came out of a running joke I had with co-workers while I was on shore duty in CT.

I suppose I'm dating myself to admit that I knew who Fred Biletnikoff was without clicking your link.

BTW: My "safeword" is "banana".
Example: I wanna shoot `em all! (banana)
The (banana) means the preceding is not to be taken seriously.
Love you all...

It started at work when my health was failing. My coworker would hear me grunting in pain and ask "Are you going to make it?" and I would reply "Yeah...(damn it)." and I told him if I said something "off" I would use the "safe word" "banana" so he would know I wasn't serious as my humor was pretty dark at the time and I was taking a lot of pain killers, legally.

Echoing bedlamite, yes that's brilliant. Took me a minute to get it, though. Duhage.

When I was a kid my code word was drosophila melanogaster.
My mom was working on a PhD in molecular biology and was using fruit flies for her research at the time.

I remember walking to school in Houston as a kid. I remember a van trying to pick up my older brother and I once. We refused. I remember my mother driving us to school later. I can't recall if that was why but probably. We moved out of Houston a couple years later.
If you use a code word, might also make it clear to not get close to whoever it is until they give the right information.
