Title: What caliber for Macaques Monkeys?
Post by: Ron on January 05, 2019, 05:40:25 PM
There is a wild population of monkeys in Florida of around 200.

Many are infected with a variation of the herpes virus that is lethal to humans.

I guess if you were going to shoot one you better do it from far far away.

In answer to the question, it depends on how far away you want to be. ;)

243 should work fine but if you want to move back 1000 yds or so 6.5PRC would be just the ticket. Little bastages would be dead before they heard the shot. ;)

.22LR should do the trick.  Cheap, effective, easily silenced.

Build a little bait pile in the open and wait.

Same general rig and cartridge suite as for Punxsutawney Phil.

Pull out and nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

Looks like youtube pulled the video of that guy nailing a couple dozen hogs with one bait pile/tannerite bomb.  With monkeys you'd probably blow a few bystanders out of the trees as well.

Shoot them all.  Invasive species carrying lethal viruses shouldn't be tolerated.

Melee weapons would be more fun.
Can't decide between a tomahawk or a bowie knife.

Yeah... fun. You go ahead and expose yourself to all kinds of diseases and I'll choose to engage from a quarter mile away.

Ewww.... I just read the article.
Yeah, a 22-250 sounds like a lot better option.

I would say 22 LR with a suppressor just to avoid unwanted attention.  Otherwise, I would think just about any varmint round would do the job.  Also, would they react to a shot by hiding.

I have heard there are feral monkeys near Austin,TX also, but just hearsay.

Wait, are we still talking about monkeys?

I don't think you can catch herpes without having sex with them.
Monkeys don't kiss very well, so I'm safe, plus I believe in marriage first.

I would be concerned with bodily fluids if I was shooting them too close....blood spray and such.  Might be a good reason not use too heavy of a caliber as you don't want them to explode on impact.
