I knowed there was a trick to it. TV ad about some super kitchen knife made out of what, transplutonium boronitride or something.
So they show the actor rubbing the edge on a brick, then slicing a tomato slick as you please.
Wow ! Wotta demonstration !
Until you notice that the rubbing on the brick is on the blade near to the hilt, and the slicing is done with the undamaged edge nearer the point.
Ha! Gotcha !

When I was in college there were several scams/pyramid schemes going around campus, advertised on bulletin boards and written on whiteboards in classrooms, all basically going “want to make lots of money and be your own boss call XXX-XXX-XXXX”
One of the scams was Cutco knives and they’d have the students who were suckered into that scheme doing demos like that. One of these gullible souls was in my Public Speaking course and his demo speech was him doing his sales pitch doing crap like that
