Title: Unhappy Hair Stylist? - Every Descriptive Word is Discriminitory
Post by: MechAg94 on September 06, 2020, 08:35:26 PM
Salon had to remove job ad for 'happy’ stylist because it is 'discriminatory' against unhappy people

And the advertisement stated, "This is a busy, friendly, small salon, so only happy, friendly stylists need apply."

But on Wednesday, Birch says she received a call from her local job center informing her they could not run her ad because the word “happy” is considered “discriminatory.”
:facepalm:

Birch said she was questioning herself.

"Was I being a bit sensitive, and is the word happy discriminative? Or has this whole world all gone mad?" Birch said.
Yes.  Yes it has.

Faces aren't allowed in the workplace these days. Unless you're San Fran Nan.

I'm guessing this might have something to do with the idea that black employees (at least in fast food and retail) have an unfriendly demeanor, compared to their white counterparts. Not sure how true that is, but it's a common idea. They might be alleging that "happy" is code for "white." Which would be dumb, but not by 2020 standards.

I don't dare tell y'all how I feel about this. It would be insensitive toward people without feelings... eh ... wait ... let me think about this ... Maybe I shouldn't rethink this. It would upset people who never have second thoughts. Sorry if I offended anyone lacking a sense of humor. Buck up, all you lackeys out there!

NOT SORRY!! (Now, where did I leave that Reese's Peanut Butter Cup?)

When you get down to basics, every hiring choice is discriminatory. Hiring the best candidate for any job means discriminating against less-qualified candidates. That's the way the world works. "Discriminating" against unhappy candidates isn't a crime. An unhappy disposition is not a protected class of people, under either federal or state law.

Quote from: Merriam-Webster on-line
Definition of discriminate

transitive verb
1a : to mark or perceive the distinguishing or peculiar features of
//Depth perception may be defined as the ability to appreciate or discriminate the third dimension …— H. G. Armstrong

b : distinguish, differentiate
//discriminate hundreds of colors

2 : to distinguish by discerning or exposing differences : to recognize or identify as separate and distinct
//discriminate right from wrong
especially : to distinguish from another like object
//discriminate the individual voices in the choir

intransitive verb
1a : to make a distinction
//discriminate among historical sources
//discriminates between literary fiction and popular fiction

b : to use good judgment

2 : to make a difference in treatment or favor on a basis other than individual merit
//discriminate in favor of your friends
//discriminate against a certain nationality

I tend to favor this definition: "b : to use good judgment"

This all is why I sometimes use the term "postjudiced" instead of "prejudiced."

Seems to me if some of those inner city groups would stop acting like idiots, there would be a lot less postjudice.

But the difference between post-judiced and pre-judiced is rarely caught by the listener who is not listening.

This strikes me as an oxymoron.

Or a Zen koan.

Or an advertising / PR trick.

It was originally "audience which" but I figured it would have more effect that way. Thanks for confirming that. =D
