Title: On Fanes and Reliquaries
Post by: Devonai on February 17, 2021, 08:51:43 PM
Apropos of nothing...

In the PC game Diablo II, there are myriad underground area to explore, some just distractions but for another chance at some filthy lucre.  Two of them had names that stuck in my memory,  because I had to look up some words in the dictionary.

The Disused Fane

The Forgotten Reliquary

Years later, I got into a stupid argument with my buddy for trying to use the word fane in a game of Scrabble. You could say it almost came to profanity.  Just some randomness on a Wednesday night you can stuff in your head reliquary.

The cenotaph appeared germane for the nymphaeum.

I had trouble with the word "querent," which is what the person inquiring of a sooth sayer or fortune teller what his sooth or fortune will be is called.

Terry runs and hides, not willing to defend that sentence construction.

Cenotaph I knew, but I had to look up nymphaeum.

I do a playthrough of Diablo II every couple of years. The game will forever remind me of dry martinis and cocktail olives, which were consumed liberally during coop sessions with my friends some 20 years ago.

I played it way too much in single player.

I had problems with it rendering properly when my old XP computer crapped out and I moved to Windows 7.

Did they ever come out with a patch for that?

Or do I need to build an XP box? (My windows 7 machine has an XP virtual machine, but it wasn't particularly satisfactory, either)

I ran it fine when my desktop machine was on Windows 7.  Maybe try a fresh install?  My sister accidentally upgraded that machine to Windows 10 when she was visiting for Thanksgiving a few years ago.*  It runs fine on that, too.

*Holy mother of downloads.  My wi-fi got beaten like a rented mule that day.

Other than the epic multiplayer sessions from 2000-2001, I've done plenty of single-player playthroughs.  The downside is trying to assemble set armor is practically impossible on your own.
