hot BMW?

Two dead, one critically injured.

https://wtop.com/fairfax-county/2022/06/6-hospitalized-after-fairfax-co-crash-involving-pedestrians/

This happened less than a mile from my house. I didn't know about when when I was coming home from work and got mixed up in the aftermath -- the Toyota was still on the scene, I didn't take notice of the BMW.

In the past 18 months people feeling the need for speed have struck four juvenile pedestrians, killing two of them.

Four days from the end of the school year.

And what happens when they get caught?
Nothing
And then they do it again the next night

Why wasn't the car locked up in a car safe where young folks couldn't get their hands on it?

Was the car registered?  These things wouldn't happen if cars were registered, especially those high-powered ones.

BMWs are popular with the young folks who think that they are "street racers." So are Dodge Chargers. And I swear, those things were thrown together in the assembly plant by a bunch of crack-addled lunatics who were grabbing random parts from random piles. They like Mustangs too. If it looks like a Hot Wheels wet dream, even if it has a 1.3 hamster whinebox under the hood, they take it out and try to drive it like they just stole it. Which is often the case anyway.

Bet the car even had one of those evil shoulder things that goes up

Did the article say the BMW was stolen?

It mentioned the BMW collided with a Toyota turning left which would happen if they were going too fast and not paying attention.

It seemed to me that most of the high school students I went to school with who had new vehicles ended up wrecking them at some point.  Maybe have just been because they ended up being the one driving out of the group.

"Did the article say the BMW was stolen?"

No word on that in any of the follow on articles, so I'm assuming no.

"It mentioned the BMW collided with a Toyota turning left which would happen if they were going too fast and not paying attention."

The intersection where this happened is less than a half mile from my house, the road on which it happened is the one I take to work every day. That road is signed at 35 MPH. At the best of times speeds often 5 to 10 higher than that for the slower cars. A lot of cars treat it as a drag strip.

The sight lines, though, especially in the direction the Toyota was pointing, are pretty good, so my guess is that the Toyota either misjudged how fast the BMW was moving or simply didn't see him because he/she was more focused on making sure the three girls who were hit were clear of the intersection.

I've seen multiple news reports saying that the BMW was traveling at a "high rate of speed."

My guess, based on the damage to both vehicles as well has how far the BMW traveled, is that it was going at least 55 mph, and probably over that.

The picture of the 4Runner doesn't look like a 55 collision to me.  It looks almost exactly like the IIHS 35mph frontal collision videos on Youtube.

Also, I know it says the BMW was speeding, but:

Quote
a white BMW speeding southbound on Blake collided with a Toyota 4Runner that was turning left onto Five Oaks.

Did the 4Runner have a green arrow? In most worlds the car turning left across traffic is supposed to yield on just a normal green.

Those oncoming left turns are dangerous.

The James Dean accident was one of them.

I myself went over a Buick which was doing an oncoming left.  I was in the bicycle lane doing 20mph and she did not see me.  Helmeted, concussion, broken collarbone.  The concussion didn't affe  affe  affe... bother me at all.

I mentioned previously in an Equinox post how cars turning left on those due east - due west  roads might not see you because of sunrise or sunset glare.

When in doubt, wait it out.

Unknown. The accident reconstruction hasn't been released yet.

As for the damage to the Toyota, it was apparently more of a glancing blow, not even remotely square.

If you take a look at the extent of damage sustained by the BMW it points to speed well in excess of 35 MPH.

Maybe,  The only pic I saw of the BMW was on the video attached to the PD's tweet.  Pretty much same as the 4Runner, front end damage on the hood and fenders that didn't compromise the passenger compartment, except they also had side damage from the light pole/traffic light thing they took out.  They did travel a good long ways.

I think a lot of folks don't realize the extant to which modern cars crumple to absorb energy and look like they were driving mach jesus after an accident when in reality super high speeds weren't involved.

Certainly, the passengers of the BMW taking off on foot after the accident doesn't make it look like they were the most responsible members of the community.

I can't find a good picture of it right now, but the driver's side of the BMW has crush and metal tearing damage the whole length of the side of the car consistent with it impacting something with the front left corner of the car and then dragging down that object.

It has impact damage on the right front that is (or seems to be to me) consistent with it sawing off the utility pole with minimal damage to the passenger side of the car.

Ok at 1:06 in the video at the top of this article you get a decent view of the left side of the BMW that shows what I interpret to be damage from it dragging along the front end of the Toyota. You don't get that kind of damage at 35 MPH.

What looks like a dark streak along the side of the BMW is where the metal is torn and peeled.

Well, looks like the driver of the BMW is facing some serious prison time...

He's been charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter.

Reconstruction says that he was going 81 MPH when he hit the turning car. Speed limit through that stretch is 35 MPH.

Reconstruction is easy these days. Beemers have had black boxes that record speed and RPM since 20 years ago.

My brother used to be the service manager at a BMW dealership. They had a fairly new Beemer come in with a blown engine. Customer expected a new engine under warranty. They ran the black box and found that the engine had been repeatedly revved to significantly higher than the redline. Customer claimed he was driving at normal speeds and the engine just blew up.

Umm ... nice try.

One of my neighbors was saying that he'd be surprised if the kid was around come trial time.

Apparently Mommy and Daddy are quite wealthy and have lots of ties back in whatever sand dune they hail from so there's speculation that the parents are going to get the kid gone.

Of course, this is all neighborhood gossip, so who the hell knows.

That would not be surprising. There are a lot of immigrants who think the only American laws that apply to them are the ones they can use to their own benefit.

At about 1:45 AM Monday morning, a SUV being driven by a 13 y.o., with 2 more 13 y.o. AND a 9 y.o. passengers ran off the road, crashed into a tree and burst into flames.  This happened in Florissant, MO, a suburb just NW of St. Louis.
Only the 13 y.o. driver survived.  He has now been charged with 3 counts of involuntary manslaughter.
1 - Where were the parents??
2 - How & where did they get the SUV?

Update on this...

Students at the local school have maintained a memorial at the intersection where the two girls were killed. Recently they were also maintaining an announcement board with trial information on it.

Yesterday, the driver of the car was convicted of two counts of involuntary manslaughter.

I read recently that a significant cause of senior citizen driver accidents was misjudging the speed of oncoming traffic. Well, it's sure hard to judge this when the the oncoming traffic is doing 80+ mph.

I don't know about non-seniors.

I've been appalled lately by the ridiculous driving shown in car ads.
Believe me, I have nothing against testosterone, but do you have to prove you have it by shitty, stupid, ahole, fuckheaded driving?

Last ticket I got, and it was only my 2nd, was in 1995 going up I-65 in Indiana and was because apparently I missed the construction zone speed drop sign. I'm thinking a semi blocked my view of it. As he was writing the ticket I asked where's the construction zone? Give me a dirty look as he handed me the ticket. There wasn't an actual construction zone just a sign saying slow down for one. Going back the other way on the way back I checked, yep there was a sign but no actual construction.

The body shop folks here have been doing a gangbuster business... Sideswipes, mirrors torn off, etc., etc.

The car that gets stolen is usually a total. Newer cars get jacked, and they get the key.

My 1990 ticket was the result of having to slow down from 55 to 25 northbound at a little dippy town on Route 85, Denver to the Grasslands.  The sign was pretty much hidden by trees and bushes and just past a 55mph highway sign.  Plead not guilty, the Magistrate listened to me very carefully, then offhandedly said "Guilty." Classic speed trap.  Fine was $35, translates to around  $100 in today's dollars.

A man's gotta know when the fix is in.  Bendova and take it, or protest and then bendova and take it.

My last ticket, about 3 years ago, was on the same stretch of road.

I wasn't paying attention, was late for work, and was clocked doing 52 in the 35.

Just today I noticed that new signs have gone up notifying drivers that the school zone will be photo speed enforced starting 29 April.

My commute takes me past an elementary school.

On my way TO work, there's a white sign with black letters that says "School Zone Ahead." A short distance beyond that is a yellow sign with flashing lights that says "School Zone - Speed Limit 25 MPH when flashing." A short distance past the school drive way is a sign that says "End of School Zone."

On my way FROM work, there's a white sign with black letters that says "School Zone Ahead."  A short distance past the school drive way is a sign that says "End of School Zone."

Anybody see the difference?

The driving in car commercials is tame compared to how the idiots drive out in the real world.

My favorite is when they whip between lanes cutting everybody off. Saw a retard try his next whip change too quick and he broke loose and shot across five lanes sideways.

Called 911 for the dumb *expletive deleted*ck and then 911 dispatch wanted to act like I was an idiot for not suicide diving across five lanes of traffic at night to assist him (I was in the fast lane) and then didn’t want to believe me that it had actually happened when I didn’t have sight of what happened to him as he went off the road

Yep, that may have to do with the prevailing flow of traffic into and out of the school entrance, how the road is used, etc. It's likely that the traffic engineers who did the study on that intersection didn't believe that the flashing yellow light system was necessary for the other side of the road.

The school across the street from me recently cut in a bus entrance on the street into my community.

There's no plan to put up flashing lights, speed limit signs, etc. outside of the general "school student crossing" signs even though there are a lot of walking students on that road.

Why?

Because that road is low traffic volume, has a 25 mph speed limit already (residential) has multiple stop signs along its length, and terminates in my community in a dead-end round about. And the school provides crossing guards at the intersections who are, often, county police officers.

Oddly enough, though, the main intersection for the high school (on the road where the accident occurred), didn't have those flashing yellow school zone signs until fairly recently, and that one I never understood because there are a lot of walkers on that route who cross that main road. And that's a primary bus entrance.

My guess is that it wasn't seen to be necessary because the light at that intersection has pedestrian crossing controls on it.

My other guess is that the school system around here, the 11th largest in the United States, is a bunch of cheap, lying, sack of *expletive deleted*it idiots. My community went hammer and tong with them over the renovations to the school across from my place (for which the new bus entrance was cut).

The lies the told the community to drum up support for the major reconstruction project they've engaged on were stunning.

For years we demanded that they deal with parents who were using our narrow street as a kiss in ride for their whelps. Parking in our private community, block our entrance, completely blocking the road, and more.

"We've sent out messages and e-mails, we've done everything we can! It's just too much trouble to have a teacher down there during beginning and end of school day!"

Their tune changed when they wanted community support for the building project. They finally agreed to a written in proffer that at least one teacher would be at that entrance every day to deal with parents. They're doing it, but everything else that they "promised" but which wasn't written into the proffers?

So sorry, we can't do that!

Back about 2012, when I was driving expedited freight runs, I was up in northern indhio, and it was about midnight. I'm doing 62 mph, cruise control, which was the truck's sweet spot. I see lights coming to pass me. It is two cars.  They pass, and I dialed 911...

"Hey, I'm on I-whatever at about milemarker... 90, and I have a moron alert for  you."

"Yessir, what is the problem?"

"I just got passed by two cars doing around 75, and here's the fun part..."

"Yessir, speeding is bad..."

"They were about ten feet apart."

"That doesn't sound safe."

"Because that's how long the tow rope was... hang on... hang on... Okay... You need to send someone to the bridge at mile 92 - looks like the rear car pitted the front car when they tried to take the exit... One of them is off the road, and the other one is under the bridge. I cannot tell if anyone was injured."

"Thanks for the help."
