I was in high school during the 1980 election.

In 1984 during the re-election I was in college -- freshman and soph year. A good part of the student body was pretty conservative and there was a lot of support for Reagan. Of course the majority of the faculty was for Mondale, and you could tell that they were sorely pissed. I wore a Reagan hat for a good part of that year...

This summed up that time so freaking well...

Yeah, they were hunted to near extinction... but a few escaped... and they breed like tribbles.

I was five when Reagan got elected. Before that I remember two things from the news, one was Israel fighting in Syria which concerned me because I saw tanks and jets on tv and lived a few miles from a tiny town named Syria. The other was seeing the hostages get off the plane. So basically I lack first hand frame of reference pre Reagan.  But from my perspective Reagan is how we got Trump. To half of my family Reagan was satan incarnate. Could do no right. Then they easily moved on to bushitler and such. That class of voter so demonized every non dem we got here. And they don’t get that a protest vote for an Orange idiot was still us asking nicely.

I was 18 years old and stationed at Orlando Florida for Basic Electronics training.  I had duty that night. Walking a perimeter watch when the results started coming in. Our route took us to the lounge about every 30 minutes.
I was pretty politically naive at the time so I didn't really understand the implications.

In 1976 during Reagan's failed bid for the nomination, the only political student organization of any note at my college was "Tech Students for Reagan."

I was 20 and in my second year of chemistry school.  It was the first Presidential election in which I voted.

Remember the media being full of "We're all gonna die!"  in a full on nuclear exchange within 15 minutes of him taking office because the first thing he was going to do was start launching missiles.

Didn't they say pretty much the same about Trump?

Yep, and I remember writing about that, somewhere.

"My fellow Americans, I am pleased to tell you today that I’ve signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes.”

President Ronald Reagan, 8/11/1984

I remember watching it and thought it was hilarious.

My parents always said they were motivated to give like $20 to the Reagan campaign.  The mountains of junk mail they received after that made them regret it.

I think they've said that about every Republican, and have been for decades. It's fallout from ONLY JFK CAN FACE THE RUSKIES AND KOOBANS DOWN AND EVERYONE COMES OUT ALIVE!

To be honest, I really think they WANT nuclear Armageddon to go off on a Republican's watch just so they can finally scree "TOLD YOU SO!"

Ronald Reagan? The actor?

Then who's vice-president, Jerry Lewis? I suppose Jane Wyman is the First Lady.  And Jack Benny is Secretary of the Treasury!

I recall always being proved wrong and being unable to accept it.
Reagan kept on doing good things but I was a new yorker and everybody hated him ... I sincerely regret being so dumb - I wish he was still alive and that I could write him a letter.

there had been a botched abortion or maybe a birth, I cant recall the exact circumstances - but a baby had been born in a hospital and it was certain to die due to some kind of medical issue - the parents didn't want it and the staff just let it die unattended on a table ...
Reagan was against it, I was really sickened but everyone I knew took the outrage as an attack on "abortion rights"
I could not understand, and still do not understand why the baby could not be allowed some warmth and human compassion before passing.  I do not recall the timeline or the facts tho , but it really affected me ...

We could do far worse. In fact, right now, we have done far worse. (And that even takes into account that the people mentioned above are dead!)

I was born at the very end of the Ford administration, so was mercifully unaware of whatever Carter was doing. My family wasn't very political then, but Reagan was the only president I'd ever been aware of. From age 4-12, I never imagined anyone else ever being president. A non-Reagan president took some getting used to.

I was in High School when Carter got elected. I remember that in my AO at least, he was God's gift to presidencies when he was campaigning and elected. That didn't last long. :)

When I was in LE in 68, Ronald Reagan came to our town to stump for Nixon.  He was governor of Cali then.  I was assigned as his local driver/bodyguard along with another officer and Reagan's California State Trooper Captain.  I spent a couple days with him, even he and I sneaking out of the hotel so I could take him to a store to buy an overcoat.

He attended a R muckety Muck dinner the first night.  My partner and I escorted him over to the venue.  One of the Big Wheel Rs told us to go in the kitchen and have some food.  Reagan tapped the guy on the shoulder and said, "These guys are with me.  Set them up a table in the banquet room"  A little later while my partner and I were chowing down on filet's,  I noticed Reagan looking around as he sat at a table on the dais with the R Swells.  I sort of waved and he got a big smile and gave us a thumbs up.  Reagan treated folks around him as friends.  He was also much smarter than many folks thought.  He carried a box on newspapers and books around with him that he read.  His State Police Captain said he was a much better man and a lot smarter than he was given credit for.  The morning he left town, my partner and I helped load his stuff into the car to transport him to the airport.  He thanked both Jack and I and called us by name, which was quite a surprise that he'd remember.

I wrote him a congrats letter some time after he won the election for president.  I reminded him about our escapades in 1968, though I didn't think he'd remember.  A couple weeks later I got an envelope in the mail that the return address said The White House, Washington DC.  Inside was a personal letter from President Reagan who included a couple comments that made it clear he'd read my letter as anyone else wouldn't have known about what he referred to.
