Title: Amazon strikes again
Post by: Hawkmoon on January 01, 2023, 04:16:59 PM
I had two packages that were due to be delivered yesterday (December 31). When I checked the tracking on Amazon's web site, both orders showed that they had arrived at a carrier facility (an actual Amazon distribution center in a former Sam's Club building about 12 miles from my house) and were out for delivery.

They never arrived. The tracking now shows they returned to the carrier facility at 7:35 p.m. No new delivery date -- it now just shows "Running Late."

Speaking from my military logistics experience, the most common reason a shipment might be flagged as "out for delivery" but not show up that day is when the package is loaded on the "wrong" truck. The truck is loaded by the warehouse crew; the driver is supposed to verify that everything on there belongs on their normal run, but often they don't realize something is off their route until they've already left - and by then, it's not their responsibility to deviate and make an extra stop unless it's First Overnight or Standard Overnight. Frequently we get overnight shipments late, around 1500, and the most common excuse is that it was on the wrong truck and they had to either deviate to the base or pass off the delivery to the proper truck/driver.

I was supposed to have two packages from Best Buy via UPS delivered Saturday.

Neither showed up. One is showing as being rescheduled for tomorrow, the other one? Still sitting at the Best Buy shipping location, never having been picked up.

That's the new sound bar and wall mount for my new TV.

At least that's supposedly coming between 1:30 and 5:30 today.

My guess is that, being Christmas Eve, the driver looked at the time somewhere in his route (probably around 6:30 to 7:00 p.m.) realized that he was nowhere near finished, and said "Screw it." Tracking showed both orders as out for delivery all day, then they were scanned back in at the delivery depot at 7:35 p.m.

The quality of the drivers for these "independent contractor" Amazon delivery companies if very much hit and miss. Two winters ago, the snow plow knocked my mailbox off the post. I happened to look out the window as an Amazon driver stopped, picked it up, and placed it back on the pedestal. Much more recently, once a few weeks ago and once on Wednesday, I have had deliveries that tracking said were "handed to resident." Since I'm the only resident here and I know nobody handed me anything, that set off alarm bells. The earlier one was eventually found -- in the weeds behind the mailbox, out by the side of the road. The one on Wednesday was dropped on the grass next to the driveway in front of the house. There were wheel tracks on the grass -- my guess is the driver nosed onto the grass, dropped the package out the window, and then boogied.

No photos in either of those incidents, and I know they are (theoretically) required to take a photo. Once, I was in the driveway working on my Jeep when the Amazon truck pulled in. I figured I could save the guy a few steps and seconds (as I have often done with UPS and the USPS), so I walked over to the truck and offered to just accept the package. He declined -- he said he had to take a photo, so I showed him where to put it, he took his photo, and off he went.

Ugh. In another thread, I talked about ordering a sight pusher. Everything else in that order arrived last week. The sight pusher is still MIA and Amazon won't let me cancel the order until Wednesday.

The crackup is that according to both Amazon and USPS tracking, it started its journey at the fulfillment center 50 miles from my house, then somehow made it to Missouri, and for the last week has been in Colorado. Apparently, from the tracking notes, it has been in Amazon's hands the whole time and was not yet transferred to USPS.

Of course par for the course, it was the one thing in that order that I wanted fast, as the sights that I want to install have been sitting here for a week.

I guess I can feel lucky.  The only issues I have had lately are simple delays, usually not all that long.

My Eyevac (granted, I ordered that from the company, not Amazon) came yesterday, right on time.

I have to say Amazon orders have been going smoothly for me for a good while, so a glitch was bound to happen.  =)

Most of my issues are when the delivery involves the USPS in some way.  Normally it is just delayed shipment such as the packages goes on a side trip or sits at a distribution center for a few days.  With people like Fedex, it is just a delay.  Had a package scheduled to deliver Saturday, but it never showed "out for delivery" status.  It was delivered Sunday instead.  I guess they were overloaded.

Have had several packages arrive at an Amazon distribution center less than 100 miles away and then disappear into a USPS blackhole then reappear after doing a 5 state tour a week or more later.

Ever since the debacle a half or so year ago, where Amazon eliminated their delivery vans in like half the country, 80% of my Amazon deliveries have been with USPS. They have actually been doing a good job in my neck of the woods.

We had a really good record with Amazon going.  Right items delivered on time without damage.  Lick ran out this weekend.  Package to be delivered to my son's apartment at college.  Nothing overly important, some fun stuff he needs for a frat thing.  Photo of the delivery shows it being left at a door with doormat on a wooden floor.  Except he has no doormat outside, and the flooring outside his door is concrete.  Driver dumped it at the wrong apartment.  Since his complex has eight buildings, with 12 apartments in each building, someone he doesn't know might be enjoying a new Nerf gun.

Just the opposite around here. Over the past year or maybe two years, the number of Amazon delivery vans I see on the roads has increased exponentially.

Apparently Amazon is really screwing with me this week. The tracking info on the sight pusher has just disappeared, so I assume they lost it in their system and after tomorrow, when they finally refund my money, I'll just need to order another one.

There was a story on the news last night about a woman who had sent her son in college a "care package" of clothes.  Because it took USPS 28 days to return the package to her (after a multi-state, bi-coastal trip), she had to repurchase the items and send a second parcel.

Daughter #2 is headed to Atqasuk, Alaska, 50 miles inland from the city formerly known as Barrow. This is for a summer college work session doing data collection and other botany/biology field work.
Wife and I are expecting summons to send several parcels over the summer, anything from boots to whatever else isn't available or costs a thousand dollars in the arctic bush.
In the program's introductory material the Professor-In-Charge insists that USPS takes remote delivery very seriously. Over the previous decade he's experienced reliable and suprisingly fast delivery by the postal service.
We shall see, we shall see.

A Barrow city referendum in 2016 changed the name back to the original "Utqiagvik" says wikipedia.
And the inland outpost is called Atqasuk. Edited in my other post. I try to use the preferred names but it gets so difficult keeping all those consonants in order.

This morning they're not doing the "cancel with the push of a button". They're making me contact them through customer service to cancel the order. I've never seen that before for a lost order - it has always been "one click" in the past.

I also see why it's "running late". It is now being advertised for $150 instead of $120, so this must be a way to not honor the discounted price that I got. I've had that happen before. Some item is a really great price, I buy it, then there is a "shipping problem" that ends up with the order being cancelled and when I look at the item page again, the item is a much higher price.

I just had an item canceled on amazon.  The product is now no longer available.  I assume the cancellation was due to it not being in stock.  I looked at other sites and it is no longer is stock anywhere I can find, even the manufacturer's site.

As far as deliveries, I had a coincidence yesterday.  Had 4 different packages at my door when I got home.  Odd how sometimes stuff ordered across widely spaced dates all shows up at the same time occasionally.

On another note, I was looking at canned pilot bread crackers for the food stash and all but one brand is out of stock.  And I found that the Amazon price is double what I saw elsewhere.  Have any of you bought that stuff in bulk somewhere else?

With gun stuff, I've been 80% buying from actual gun people, but sometimes shipping is pretty ridiculous if you're under the "$100 free shipping minimum" or whatever, at which point I figure I need to get my money's worth out of Prime. Especially if I'm only buying one small item.

I don't limit myself to doing that with "mail order" companies.
Last October, we had to euthanize my elderly mother's cat.  The vet had a note on the door that the office would be closed on Thursday as the doctor would be gone.  When they contacted me on Tuesday to alert me to the cat's condition (it also had "fe-lu), I let them know that I would drive down the next day (Wed.) to collect the body for burial.
Got down there to find the office locked and the lights out with no mention of them being closed on Wednesday.
When they sent the bill for $325, I wrote back, complaining that my time was as valuable as theirs and the staff failed to let me know on Tuesday that they would be closed on Wednesday.
I reduced the payment to $300 and indicated that, if they accepted this payment, the bill was "paid in full".

They haven't contacted us since.

Speaking of Amazon delivery

Quote
A video of an Amazon delivery driver handing a package off during an active police standoff last month has gone viral.

The driver nonchalantly approached the apartment complex that was surrounded by police vehicles and handed a prime delivery to one of the officers manning the scene.

He is then seen snapping a pic of the dramatic drop off, confirming its delivery and continuing on his way.

Last week, an item I'd ordered was on the Amazon truck for delivery.  A thunderstorm rolled in.  I got an email saying the package was delayed, I should receive it in the next day or two.

Four days later I canceled the order & re-ordered the part.  It's now due in next week.

Nov 24 - Ordered an item
Nov 27 - Carrier picked up the package
Nov 28 - 4:00 PM - package delayed in transit
Nov 28 - 7:00 PM - package delayed in transit
Dec 01 - On the order page it now says that if the package isn't delivered by Dec 03, I have the option to cancel.

I'm sure the 10% increase in the price since I ordered has nothing to do with this.

Tracking says it shipped from their facility in Kyle, TX, on Thursday, 2/15. Kyle is about 45 minutes down I-35 from where I live.

Friday 2/16 - Tracking says it just left Savannah, GA, which it reached by way of Atlanta, GA.

Saturday 2/17: tracking says it was picked up again today in Kyle.

Sunday 2/18: tracking says it left Katy, TX - that's out towards Houston, 100 miles out of the way. Supposed to be delivered Monday. (President's Day? By USPS?)

Sunday 2/16: Late evening now. Tracking says the package is back in Kyle, TX, and is still supposed to be delivered Monday.

When I get in the truck to go to work or shopping, I almost always see an Amazon van (more and more the electric ones too...) in my neighborhood. Sometimes two.

I've only had a couple of problems. At work, they can't figure out that my store is at the end of the strip mall, and keep being unable to see it. I suspect those are the kids who look at the GPS, and no further.

I often use a drop box, and I have had one situation where the driver "couldn't find it." Sigh.

When the pay is peanuts, you think you can hire someone other than monkeys?

I live in an ordinary residential suburb - single family homes on lots that average 90 feet wide, with house numbers clearly marked on the mailboxes (one in front of each house) and on the homes themselves. None of the homes on my block have trees or shrubs dense enough to obscure a view of the house, and the typical setback from the street is only 40 or 50 feet. Yet I've gotten neighbor's Amazon packages dropped by my front door at least 3 times in the last 5 or 6 years. (Probably not too bad based on what I've read here.)

We've had issues for several months now with many of our packages being delivered either to the neighbor across the street, or the one next door.  Our address is clearly labeled, and well-lit at night.

When I click "Not so great" after my packages end up at someone else's door, I sometimes get asked "Do we have your correct address?"

When we first moved into this house the mailman for this neighborhood thought delivering to the right house number was completely optional and no amount of complaining to the USPS made any difference. He got the streets right but often not the house numbers. That went on for a year or so and only stopped when he was replaced, probably promoted.

We do sometimes get packages for the wrong street though and the street name probably have a lot to do with it. We live on Pomeroy Dr. Next street over is Roypom and there's Roy and Pomeroy Ct.

I've been having problems with the drivers not staying on the driveway.  I admit it's a bit awkward having to back up to the right then make a 90-ish* left to get out, but everyone else seems to be able to do it.  They have left ruts in the lawn before, but this last time, well....

Anyway, after the last rains came through, (5" by my rain gauge), we had an Amazon delivery.  He backed up to the right and went about 5' onto the shoulder.  He didn't get stuck, 'cause the E-van has front wheel drive and was able to pull him out.  He pulled forward, but didn't turn tight enough and ran out onto the front yard by about 1/2 the length of the van, where he got stuck.*  I offered to call a tow truck for him (I'm recouping from knee replacement), he turned me down 'cause he was afraid he'd get fired.  Instead, he went to two of the neighbors asking for help.**

Ended up trying a small tractor, a 1 ton dually and a 1/2 ton 4wd (separately) before finally getting him out.

Amazon's insurance is sending a check to cover the damages.

*Even if he'd not gotten stuck, the trajectory he was on would have ended at the tree planted near the drive.

**After dark, on a rainy night, in a pretty rural area.  Talking afterwards, we all 3 answered the door with a pistol in hand.

When the pay is peanuts, you think you can hire someone other than monkeys?

Sadly, Amazon pays better for untrained primates than my store does...

Cliff, my friend’s first call when he was called out the last big snow was an Amazon van in someone’s yard. The homeowner said they would get them out. A little later there was another call. Same RP, same address. He went back out and the same guy was stuck in the snow across the street from the same driveway.

Two people were getting ready to help the guy out, and my friend said: “When you get out again, drive slowly. You are a terrible driver.”

I had a computer UPS in my cart at a price of $132.99 but I hesitated to place the order. It was still at $132.99 as of Thursday or Friday. Went to place the order on Saturday and the price magically shifted to $149.99. I'm not happy, but I hadn't placed the order so I can't call them out on a bait-n-switch.

Ordered an item from Amazon on Wednesday, 2/14

Tracking says it shipped from their facility in Kyle, TX, on Thursday, 2/15. Kyle is about 45 minutes down I-35 from where I live.

Friday 2/16 - Tracking says it just left Savannah, GA, which it reached by way of Atlanta, GA.

Saturday 2/17: tracking says it was picked up again today in Kyle.

Sunday 2/18: tracking says it left Katy, TX - that's out towards Houston, 100 miles out of the way. Supposed to be delivered Monday. (President's Day? By USPS?)

Sunday 2/18: Late evening now. Tracking says the package is back in Kyle, TX, and is still supposed to be delivered Monday.

Looks more like obsessive compulsive package disorder...
