Title: The Oscars
Post by: HankB on March 13, 2023, 10:13:10 AM

I DID NOT watch the Oscars, but I just read this morning that "Best Picture" was Everything, Everywhere, All At Once.

I had this on a Netflix DVD, and it's one of the few movies I've rented that was SO BAD I didn't watch the whole thing. In fact, I quit when there was a kung fu fight in which the fighters, in order to access kung fu skills from a parallel universe, had to shove random office objects up their backsides to alter probability.

The other parts of the movie sucked too, but the aforementioned scene was the last straw in this wretched piece of cinematic garbage.

FWIW, the only other 2023 Best Picture nominee I've seen so far was Top Gun:Maverick (liked it), and I'll eventually see the All Quiet on the Western Front remake, if only to see how it compares with a couple of previous versions. Maybe - when I'm bored - I'll take a look at Dancing With Smurfs II (Avatar Way Of Water).

The other nominees look like utter crapola. I'm thinking, considering how bad these are,  JUST WAIT until the Motion Picture Academy's DEI prerequisites kick in . . .

I give not one *expletive deleted*it about the Oscars or the entitled whiny bitches who think their opinions drive public policy...

But I was very happy to see that Brendan Fraiser won Best Actor. From all accounts he's not like the "beautiful people" set. He's apparently approachable, friendly, down to earth, likes to talk to his fans and doesn't think he shits gold and diamonds.

Always liked him for the reasons you gave. The Hollywood elites have given him crap for not being like them for years.

Did Will Smith hit anyone?  That's the only clip I want to see.

I'd like to see him slap Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Jason Statham, or (drum roll please) Chuck Norris.  >:D

Yeah, I know some of these guys are getting along in years, but I still think it would make the show more entertaining.

The Film Threat channel on youtube was having a watch party with some people I follow.  I had some other stuff to do and didn't catch it.  If I hadn't heard about that, I wouldn't have even known it was happening.

I heard some say Everything, Everywhere, All At Once was decent, but I never saw it.  Top Gun Maverick was pretty good.

2004. Hillary Swank.

I see where Top Gun Maverick (  [barf] ) managed to get the best sound Oscar which I think was a mercy award for such a cheesy movie. IMO this was nothing more than a rehash of the original Top Gun which was pretty much a really good recruiting tool but a Top Cheesy movie.

Linda Hunt won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for playing a guy in The Year of Living Dangerously (1982)

I recommend watching it as a standalone, rather than comparing it to the book or the original movie. I thought is was very good as a standalone. As usual, I also recommend watching it subtitled rather than dubbed.

One of the things I always liked about Brendan Fraser is how mobile and expressive his face was and that he could change it in an instant.
Sadly, I like Jamie Lee Curtis but she is not aging well.  Shes over 4 years younger than I am and looks 5-10 years older.

And make sure to watch the 3+ hour version of that, which was a mini-series on kraut TV at the time.

There's a new Das Boot on Hulu. I'm only one episode into it, so am not sure what I think yet.

That scene is probably why the movie was even nominated, and why it swept so many categories.   [barf]

Didn't Dustin Hoffman get a nomination for Tootsie?

And Julie Andrews got a nomination for her role in Victor/Victoria, playing a woman pretending to be a man pretending to be a woman . . .

I've never been interested in awards shows, but I hear there was actually some good stuff going on at this one.

Apparently, Short Round got an Oscar before Harrison Ford did, which amazes me.

And the race card is coming out hard and fast, with virtually all of it directed at Jamie Lee Curtis' win.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/movies/oscars/jamie-lee-curtis-s-oscar-win-has-sparked-backlash-and-people-are-not-holding-back/ar-AA18xU1M?ocid=entnewsntp&pc=U531&cvid=6f8cd07bd2164a48ff6c9363659f131d&ei=71

African Americans are pissed off that she won over Angela Basset, and Asians are pissed off that she won over Stephanie Hsu.

One comment...

"Random mundane white woman in film, one of the antagonists even, winning in a film with a primarily asian cast is crazy."

And, overt threats of violence...

"everyone who voted for jamie lee curtis over angela bassett and stephanie hsu needs to sleep with one eye open"

That's charming.

Oscar who?

I echo others on that.  Must be twenty years since I gave up caring a nit about the awards except for some technical things like the music.

I discovered ninety percent of it was "inside" manuevering, gift giving, favor-trading, schmoozing and snoozing, and so on.  I'm not sure the other ten percent had anything to do with skill or talent.

How-ev-er, as a loyal member of APS, I did scan briefly through this thread and found nothing to pique my interest except the amusing suggestions for various people to smack other various people.

Good-o on that. :evil grin:

Yep, but that was the year that Ghandi was released, and Ben Kingsley was a shoe in for the Oscar.

And now people are losing their minds over Brendan Fraser winning for The Whale, and also for the movie being awarded for best makeup.

FRASER'S NOT FAT! HOW DARE THEY AWARD HIM FOR PLAYING A FAT MAN!

These stupid *expletive deleted*s apparently don't understand what acting is.
