Title: Bathroom mold and stain remover that works
Post by: Brad Johnson on March 18, 2023, 08:05:47 PM
If anyone's been looking for a bathroom mold and stain remover, try RMR 86 Pro. Got some after reading a bunch of reviews and can confirm it is very effective. Easy to use, too. Spray on, wait, rinse. Be sure to wear gloves and open a window, though. This stuff ain't screwin' around.

When we would have a problem/plague run through a vivarium in the labs, we've lose the test subjects, and then apply hot bleach pressure washing to the room(s).

Wally World has sodium hypochlorite for $5.47 a gallon in "use to clean your pool" strength.

Fun with household chemistry...

You would not believe some of the conversations we had around the big tables in the cafeteria...

Or... Given your makeup here... You would giggle... Personally, I'm going to have to do a test or two with antifreeze...

I don't think bleach and glycols will do much unless the bleach is highly concentrated, like granulated calcium hypochlorite (that will spontaneously ignite and make a bunch of smoke.)  They should react... not sure what the product will be; I don't think chloroform. Chloral hydrate maybe?

I've heard independently that borax is good for mold removal even tough it's not 100% benign in the sense that you don't want ro eat a spoonful of it.  But at least it wouldn't seem to need much in the way of ventilation.

I occasionally use Clorox for things and I have a full function half-face gas mask for this. It's been a while, maybe I ought to replace the cartridges for it.  Oh, and I usually have to shave before using it.

So... Bleach?

Yep. MSDS lists sodium hypochlorite, 4-8%. Unlike household bleach it also lists surfactants, which I presume does something relative to pentrating residual moisture or promoting sustained product cling/exposure.

I just use straight household bleach when I want to get radical on something.

I learned the annoying way a few years ago, though, that bleach fumes, even in very low concentrations, will set off my sealed battery photoelectric smoke alarm in the hallway outside the bathroom unless I do a VERY thorough rinse of the tub enclosure and let the fan run for a couple of hours.

I also buy the WalMart pool bleach to treat organic stains before pressure washing.  Up here in the wet part of the PNW, algae and mold grows on a lot of surfaces.  Rinse, rinse, rinse, however, to avoid killing the plants.

We've had good results with Kaboom spray.  A lot of bleach in it, so crack the window, turn on the fan, and wear gloves.  It comes out in a thick foam that sticks to the walls and slowly runs down, cleaning as it goes.

Just looked it up.  Looks like Oxi Clean bought them out.

Hope they didn't change the formula much.
