Amazon just dropped off the new PTO for my riding mower. It seems to me that the pulley for the deck belt should spin freely when there's no electricity to the unit.* This one doesn't. I can get it to rotate, but it takes a lot of force.
I hope to install the PTO tomorrow - if this one's good.
*This is one time when I wouldn't mind being told I'm wrong.

It's just like a car A/C clutch. It should be somewhat free but being brand new it might just be the bearings are tight or the lube is cold.

In that case, sounds like it's operating properly.
This PTO isn't the most expensive out there, "you get what you pay for" has been known to bite when least expected. Thanks for the confidence boost.

My experience with the two Husqvarna Electric PTO's I've changed out is they are pretty stiff. They almost act as a half-assed brake on the blades when you disengage them.

This is a Husqvarna also. And yeah, it's stiff.
After 3 or 4 hours of researching after posting this I finally found 1 article that mentioned there are weaker magnets on the side opposite the electric magnet that do in fact act as a brake. They must have failed on the old one long ago, it's been free-wheeling for years.
It's working now. Hopefully it'll last as long as the old one (966hrs). =D
