Title: The Tolls of Teaching Archery
Post by: Ben on May 13, 2023, 05:47:55 PM
I keep a right-handed recurve bow for guests (I'm a lefty) so they can have fun stuff to do while visiting. I've had a few guests in the last few months, and each of them has lost one if not more arrows by missing the target. Some I find, some I don't. I found one today from sometime between the last time I used my drip irrigation for the fruit trees and grapes and today, when I was pulling and checking the drip line to start it for the season. They missed a big ass 24"x24" target, but managed to make this bullseye.

Given the nature of arrows wanting to glance to the side of round objects that's quite an unlikely hit.

I've noticed that when arrows hit the ground at a shallow angle, they like to burrow down. There was a bunch of dead vegetation over the drip line, so I guess that kept the arrow from glancing away. Still a hell of a shot though.

Pretty steep angle, was the target in the sky?

Uh, I lifted it so it would be easier to see. It was buried under dead veg before that.  =)

Ok, That makes sense. Carry on...

I’m guessing field points. Target point (bullet shape) would be a lot less likely to stick like that.

Whatever you call these ones:

Get you some of these for your guest arrows. They will stick in target butt just fine but won't burrow into the grass. Also great for small game.

I laughed and thought it was a typo as well. It wasn't just you.

I think I may have a bag of those in my compound hunting bow case. I had bought them for small game hunting, but I'll have to dig them up and give them a go for targets.

Wow. You and irrigation systems just hate each other, don't you?

And wow... you clowns would have never made it back in Medieval and Renaissance England, where archery practice was mandatory...

Even firearms target backstops are called butts.  I "worked the butts" at high-power rifle matches.

Go ahead, giggle if you must.

Some rock formations are also called butts.

(First time I worked the butts, I wondered how come everybody was wearing hearing protection.  When the first round came over, I understood why. CRACK!.... boom.)

How far behind the targets was that drainpipe and the arrow?  Seems unlikely to have retained enough energy to penetrate that pipe that way with a target pile.  Just interested in the probabilities involved.
