Inmate Says He Needs Thor's Hammer, Drum
(12-21) 19:10 PST SALT LAKE CITY, (AP) --

An inmate is suing the Utah Department of Corrections for denying him his right to practice an ancient Nordic religion while behind bars.

Michael Polk is serving time for aggravated assault and robbery. He filed a lawsuit against corrections officials in federal court, accusing them of denying him religious items that he says are necessary to practice the Asatru religion.

The religion worships ancient Nordic gods like Odin, Thor, Tyr and Heimdal.

In the lawsuit, Polk says he has been a member of the Asatru faith since 2005, and in order to properly practice it he needs items including: a Thor's Hammer, a prayer cloth, a Mead Horn used for drinking Wassail, a drum made of wood and boar skin, a rune staff and a sword.

Quote
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!

Well, I'm not an expert on "corrections".  But my guess is the hammer and sword might be a problem for someone in prison for aggravated assault. rolleyes

There oughta be rule that you only get to practice those religions you have held for at least five years.  Cut down on "I"m bored, what a neat religion?"

Yeah, I know it's unconstitutional.  Still a good idea.  Of course the fifth anniversary of my own conversion doesn't roll around for another couple of months.  Still think it's a good idea.

I'm OK with that.....in fact, the DOC should even give him his own "Odin" who can throw .308 "lightning bolts" if he starts getting a little "sinful"..... Wink

Curiously enough I was reading up on this at Wikipedia a couple days ago.

Thor's not the only one said to have a hammer.  Ukko has one too.
In thy presence is fulness of joy.
At thy right hand pleasures for evermore.

Religion is innately spiritual, ergo not physical, though it can have physical manifestations. You do not need to go to church to practice it. You do not need Thor's hammer.

Oh and inmates have a lot of constitutional rights denied (ie pretty much all of them). Why not religion? They're freaking criminals imprisoned for their crimes, not children.

The sword probably not go over well.  But I myself dont think they should be allowed bibles either as the bible itself can be used to hide contraband.

As can any book, and those are allowed.

I assume you therefore mean they should not be allowed any books whatsoever.

True, but I seem to remember reading that only bibles were allowed to be kept permanently in the room while other books had to be returned.

Thor called and said his hammer is not available for loaning out.   The drum he normally would loan, but The Thunder Gods band has a couple of gigs coming up....

Don't you think that's going to depend on the prison?  In any case, it's pretty silly to ban bibles or other books for that reason.  Criminals are always going to have places to hide contraband.  It would make more sense to ban clothing.

Don't worry, seeker.  They would read the Bible, and find out that they can use fig leaves.

Thor is a member here at APS, he has yet to pipe in on the subject.
Probably rummaging around his closet saying "where in Valhalla did I put that Hammer"
