Shopper pulls gun, stops robbery cold

I just wish this was told about in the MSM.

Shopper pulls gun, stops robbery cold
Held suspect at grocery store until police officers arrived
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=59503

A grocery store customer in Indianapolis is being credited with halting an armed robbery by pulling his own weapon and pointing it at the assailant until police arrived.

According to a report in the Indianapolis Star, Charlie Merrell, 51, was in a checkout line at a grocery store called Bucks IGA on the city's south side when a "masked man jumped a nearby counter and held a gun on a store employee."

The police report cited by the newspaper said the incident happened at 5:17 in the afternoon Monday as Merrell was doing some year-end shopping.

"While the suspect was demanding cash from the workers," according to the police report, "Merrell pulled his own handgun, pointed it at the robber and ordered him to put down his weapon."

The newspaper noted that Officer Jason Bockting, in his documentation of the incident, said when the suspect seemed to hesitate, "Merrell racked the slide on his gun to load a round in the chamber."

At that point, the report said, "the suspect placed his gun and a bag of cash on the counter, dropping some of the money & the suspect removed his mask and lay on the floor."

Merrill, meanwhile, held the suspect at gunpoint until officers arrived and took him away in handcuffs.

Police reported Merrell had a valid permit to carry the handgun, and they recovered an unloaded .380-caliber handgun and $779 cash from the suspect.

Police records show Dwain Smith, 19, was being held in the Marion County Jail on a bond of $30,000 on initial charges of robbery, criminal confinement, pointing a firearm, battery and carrying a handgun without a license.

Merrell is fortunate that the robber wasn't hopped up (and that the gun was unloaded) or he'd be dead now--and possibly a few of the bystanders, too.

For carrying, I agree whole heartedly.  I do think that there would be a lot of fear instilled in a BG if in a dark house they hear a round being chambered.

Well, it was very cold in Indianapolis when this happened=Global Warming.

Now it is raining and in the mid-40s in Indianapolis=Global Warming.

The alleged robber will now be prosecuted in Marion Superior 2, Hon. Robert Altice presiding=Global Warming.

Somehow, "stopped cold" would've implied a Righteous Shooting to me.

This is one of the reasons I just ordered an HK P7. It was always meant to be just about the safest gun to carry with a round in the chamber.

As for carrying unchambered, I've noticed that most often among 1911 carriers who don't feel secure carrying it cocked-and-locked, dunno.

The most I'd do is thumb the hammer back on my CZ75BD.  I carry it down most of the time.

I'd be reduced to making a "ka-click" noise out of the corner of my mouth, like Glock owners have to do.  The safety comes off as the gun comes up.

Actually, there's a bit of rattle in the Commander, maybe I could just shake it a bit.  Though that might not be intimidating....  undecided

For intimidation, I've always found that a close-range muzzle blast is quite intimidating.   smiley

Chambered or not, I love stories with happy endings.
As long as the citizens of the United States own and keep personal weapons, we can argue about all the other issues that concern us.  The instant we lose the ability to keep weapons, our masters will decide all those other issues for us.

I've practiced actually sweeping the safety off as I clear leather.  If I'm drawing, odds are I'm shooting.

You turn off the safety at 1?  Have always trained to turn it off at 2.

I know no one who carries a 1911 in Condition 3, but I do not know everyone.

I'm thinking the whole racking the slide nonsense was made up for the police report or he said it because that is what they do on television.

If two is after rotation, that's where I do it.  Actually I'm a bit sloppy and the gun is moving forward/up as it's coming off.

Man, it's a good thing the cops showed up before that Merrel guy went on a killing spree....
He never brought you an unbalanced budget, which is a perennial joke. He never voted himself a wage increase and, to this day, gives back part of his salary every year. He has always voted to preserve the Constitution, cut government spending, lower healthcare costs, end the war on drugs, secure our borders with immigration reform and protect our civil liberties.

I had to look that up, so now I'm smarter, but to no particular purpose.  I wasn't planning to shake it like a Poloroid picture, more like dice in a cup.
