Planning an Alaska Vacation - Advice wanted
« on: January 07, 2008, 06:59:21 PM »
My father has decided he wants to take his boys (and possibly his daughter in law) to Alaska in July or August of this year.

It will be primarily fishing but with other exciting naturey things. (Yes I said Naturey... its a word just like womany)  So I need advice

Anyone have a place that they went to a Lodge or Bed and Breakfast that they can recommend?  So far my Dad is drawn to this one... Soldonta Bed and Breakfast
Does anyone have any suggestions on a good place to go river fishing and see the sights....

Criteria-
~5-7 nights
~River Fishing
~Possiblities of canoeing or other naturey activities that would be enjoyable because Alaska is so pretty... (Thats what they tell me)
~Willing to take a puddle jumper to the "resort" (ha) but they gotta have showers.
I am ok with just a lime pit.. but the wife if she goes would not be.  Real Cabins.. no tents.. (wife afraid of tents... go figure..)

Suggestions....Ideas...Alms...Tips...

I'll need pictures of the wimminfolk, and make sure to write your PIN number ON your ATM card.  grin

You want to fish the Kenai?  That's more or less guaranteed catching of either salmon or trout (depending on timing).

I've stayed here a couple times in Cooper Landing for business conventions, usually in Chalet 4.

Actual cabins with flush toilets, the proprietors are fishing guides and several restaurants and the Kenai Princess hotel is just around the corner for "fine dining" and a nice bar.  Real friendly people.

Other activities on site and only a couple hours drive from Seward for halibut fishing or whale watching and glacier tours.

Soldotna will have similar amenities, though is more of a city, and is just a couple hours from similar deep sea fishing and tourism out of Homer.

If you're going to be on the Kenai peninsula already go on down to Homer and do some Halibut fishing.  My daughter did this trip several years ago and came back with about six hundred pounds of prime halibut.  Of course the all got to fish the Kenai river for salmon too and brought back plenty of that but she still tslks about the halibut.

I like the fishing out of Seward better, it's a little more sheltered and depending on when you go you can catch ocean-bright silvers and maybe go shark fishing.

Kodiak bears. Coastal brown bear. Griz. Moose. Wolf. Etc.

Plenty of stuff to hunt if you're looking for "exciting naturey" things to do. (Unless you're looking for a womany experience . . .  grin )
