Little dogs and bad owners
« on: January 12, 2008, 10:19:48 AM »
Sweet mother mary I hate little yippy dogs that are left out all day by thier negligent owners.  I can't even leave my back windows open without listening to the caucophany of yipping mutts.  Damn "kick me" dogs!

As pet's they're atrocious.  But since they would easily fit on a barbecue grill, they may have another use.

Any undiciplined dog is a PITA. Big or small if you aren't willing to do obedience training then you shouldn't have a dog.

I've seen yippie dogs that have been trained well and they are nice to be around, I've seen big unruly labs that I sooner punch the owner because they didn't train their dog.

The new neighbors across the alley have a chocolate lab that barks constantly when they're gone.  Beautiful dog, and friendly as all get-out, but a loud, constant irritation when they aren't at home.  I hope the owners get a handle on him because the neighbor next door is planning to take matters into his own hands if they don't.

One of my best friends is a chi wah wah (SIC I know) Rat Terrier mix.
He is a giant fighter stuck in a littles dogs body. Fearless.
When we were camping he wouldn't bark at all. A small black tactical wonder dog.
Instead of barking at the coyotes and giving away our location he would give a tiny little growl, loud enough
for me to hear.
I know the yotes knew where we were anyway, but he only growls when something is trying to sneak up on us. great for urban combat shtf situation. He'll bar at other dogs when playing and if some one knocks at the door. but if you sneak up on his pack (me, ex GF, etc) he'll do the low growl.

Small dogs can be great if you've got the right one. Much better ratters then cats too.

Its just something about the high-pitched high-frequency yips that gets under my skin.  That, and it seems that nobody in our neighborhood has a big dog.  Ours is the biggest on our street, at 40lbs.

Has anyone TOLD the owners that their dog barks constantly while they're gone, or is your neighbor just going to execute the dog anyway?

Have a conversation with that neighbor.  If he's a decent guy, he'll do something about it.  If not, there are legal channels to have the matter resolved.  Don't take it out on a friendly dog.

I was nearly driven to poison a dog at my old house.  It was a vicious pit-bull mix, and the owner was textbook white trash.  I couldn't go within a few feet of the fence separating my yard from his, because the dog was intent on ripping my arm off.  An attempt at conversation failed miserably, and the cops in that city didn't care.  After a good dousing of pepper spray, that dog steered clear of me, and the neighbor defaulted on the house shortly thereafter.

I heard they have collars for the dog that will zap them when they bark. Maybe if there cheap enough you could buy one for the dog. Put it on him and leave a note for said owner, give him two choice leave it on the dog or the dog gets it. (does not imply death) signed your friendly neighborhood. grin
I needed a mod to change my signature because the concept of "family friendly" eludes me.
Just noticed that a mod changed my signature. How long ago was that?

We have a beagle.  It used to bark at the neighbors dog when we'd let him out in the back yard.

I got one of those collars that emits a high pitched whistle when the dog would bark.  I think I paid about $30-40 for it.

It took less then a week for our dog to stop barking at the neighbors dog when he was let out in the back yard.

My brother has a big Weimaraner and an inside dog.  That dog has the potential for great destruction and noise inside house, but his wife has him trained pretty good.  He won't bark unless someone walks up to the house and he has an ingrained fear of knocking things over in the house.  If his ball goes into a corner among a bunch of things, he will sit there and stare at it until someone gets up and fishes it out.

The aforementioned neighbor who is considering drastic measures has had several "converstations" with them.  I heard one and it was neither neighborly nor quiet.  I also understand that the police have been called more than once about the noise.  I have mentioned it to the owner as well, though at a slightly decreased level of intensity and vitriol.  They guy is nice enough, but seems unable or unwilling to arrange for a volume reduction on his precious pup.

little dogs don't bother me. some are pretty cool. some are pretty useless. what bugs me is stupied, dum-dum dogs that are piggy, fat and untrained. that drives me nuts. and its almost never the dogs falt. its the owner. theres one golden retrevier that comes to the kennel. he is fat, very loud and dumber then a box of dirt. he's sweet, loves people but doesn't know how to behave. if you try to be nice and pet him, he will knock you down and scratch you. but its not the dogs fault. his people leave him in the garage, never really play with him and feed him whenever he barks. we found out that he loves tennis balls during one of his stays at the kennel and when he his people came to pick him up they had absolutly no clue. they were just like "oh, he likes tennis balls? really? who cares?".
there are way to many dog owners out there who treat their animals like an acsessory and not a dog. mostly its suburban familys who figure that the average american is supposed to have a golden retrever/yellow/black lab/cocker spainal, so they go down to the pet store and buy a dog from a puppy mill or find some backyard breeder with a sign that says "AKC regestered ____ puppies for sale." and just buy a dog regardless of the fact that that AKC paper is usually worthless. then they get the dog home and 'awww what a cute wittle puppy' until they puppy turns out to be work. then it gets tossed in the backyard or garage and ignored for the most part. then these same people wonder why on earth their dog doesn't sit or fetch or walk nicly on a leash! its all i can do to keep from shouting in there face "cause you didn't WORK with the poor thing!"
i have three dogs. i can give you chapter and verse about their habits, likes/dislikes, what sounds they make and favorite foods/walks/toys and places to sleep in the house. all three have tricks that they do on command. all three walk on a leash. all three are at a good weight, have good coats, trimmed nails, shots, collers, and lots and lots of attention. my bosses have over 90 dogs. mostly anatolian shepards. they breed anatolians. they don't do it for money or glory. they do it cause they LOVE anatolians and wish to continue and improve the breed. in fact the money they make from selling puppies isn't even a drop in the pan compared to what they spend on those dogs. and once again they know every name, every temperment and everything about each dog and all of the dogs get tons of love and care.
90 dogs is a bit much for most folks, 3 is pretty managbal, so to have one dog and not take the time to make it a good dog is unecscusible.

errr.... sorry about the rant.... bad owners gets me everytime....
