And this time the pit bull is a good doggie.  They should put the man to sleep.  Cheesy

Dog bites man; it's news as pit bull foils an attack
Friday, February 01, 2008

TROUTDALE -- Most people teach their dogs not to bite. But there's a time and place for everything.

The time was early Thursday. The place was Troutdale.

A 19-year-old woman took her pit bull outside, and a man grabbed her. That's when the dog came to her rescue.

Troutdale police say it bit the man -- hard enough that he let the woman go and ran away.

The attack occurred about 12:50 a.m. at an apartment complex in the 600 block of Southwest 257th Avenue.

The man is thought to be 25 to 30 years old, 5-foot-10 and 170 pounds. He wore dark pants and a black hooded sweat shirt. Anyone with information is asked to call 503-665-6129.

Sgt. Marc Shrake, a Troutdale Police Department spokesman, said it is unusual for someone to attack a person in the presence of a pet dog.

"Especially with it being a pit bull," he said.

From what I've seen, most pit bulls are well socialized friendly animals.

They CAN be dangerous, and can certainly cause more damage than the football size dogs that have been the only ones to get aggressive with me.

I will stress that a pit(or any dog for that matter) should always be attended or secured away from unfamiliar people and animals.

Dogs are social animals, they are capable of taking clues from their humans on what to do.  Friendly greetings?  They look forwards to pets and scratches, playtime.  Attack their people?  That'll lead to the dog defending their fellow pack members.

My grandfather's dogs, boston terriors, attacked a person in at least one case - he was trespassing in gramp's backyard while trying to evade police and kicked a mostly grown puppy - never saw the others.  Ended up with having two females(one the mother) holding onto his legs and a male with his mouth around the guy's throat that growled* whenever the guy tried to move or talk.  Got to lay there quite a while as animal control was busy on the other side of the county, and the cops weren't willing to enter the yard(Grandpa might have more dogs), shoot at the dogs - the goblin wasn't hurt, and the dogs small enough that to try to shoot them would be to shoot the goblin.  Grandpa finally got home, entered the yard with the police to shoo the dogs off so the police could arrest the crook.

Was a bit hilareous as the goblin tried to sue gramps for having vicious dogs - despite the fact that they never broke the skin.

The idea of a bunch of Boston Terriers going medieval on a goblin is delicious.

A couple of pits got into a local stable here in Lubbock this week.  Severely mauled several of the horses, killing one.  It's really become a hot button because they were mini-horses used for helping out sick folks.  Think therapeutic petting zoo.

Too bad the dogs were untrained and unrestrained.  I happen to like pits, I find them extremely smart and loyal.  Unfortunately, this also makes them prime candidates for aggressive and territorial behavior if they are not properly trained and socialized.
