Flashlights and the TSA...
« on: March 27, 2008, 04:08:36 PM »
I'm going to leave it home... but I was wondering: would the TSA confiscate my surefire flashlight?  Heaven forbid we have two lithium batteries in an anodized aluminum tube!

Thanks!

AFAIK, if it's got the crown that can be used as a weapon, they'll call it a weapon and take it.

Lithium batteries are not a problem in carry-on luggage.

Spare lithium batteries that are not installed in the electronic device for which they were designed are not allowed in checked baggage.

To the best of my knowledge, your Surefire is OK for carry-on baggage.  It is definitly OK for checked baggage.

Not saying all TSA guys do this, but don't be surprised if some guard recognizes a nice Surefire, says it's a weapon, and confiscates it for his own use.

Hmmm... I think it will, depending on size.  Loose pocket change will set-off the magnatometer, so I guess that it has enough ferrrous metal to be detected.  I'd bet the flashlight will, too.

I think that you will be fine with having it in a carry-on bag.  I doubt that TSA will remove it as a weapon unless it has the impact device on it.

I've flown with mine once, nary a problem...I also had my CPAP with me, so I automatically get extra screened....no one questioned it.

I carry my Surefire 6P every time I fly.

Along with my steel Cross pen.

Metals do not have to be ferrous to set off a metal detector.  Conductivity is the important property to allow eddy current generation in the object to be dectected.

Gold, silver, aluminum, etc...can all be detected provided they have sufficent mass relative to the sensitivity of the detector.
