Question for the Jewish folks about kosher food
« on: May 26, 2008, 10:51:11 AM »
There's this guy on another prominent gun forum that goes by the name of "Rabbi".  He's not a rabbi, yet he "claims" to have been to rabbinical school.  Quite the pompous and arrogant a-hole, too, but that's another story altogether.  Anyway, since he claims to be single and rich, he says he eats every meal out every day of the week.  He often frequents regular chain restaurants.  How can a Jewish person such as this be certain his food is kosher if he can't see it being prepared?  Those scrambled eggs could have been cooked in a skillet just used to fry bacon.  Those french fries could have been cooked in the same deep frying oil as that last breaded pork cutlet.  What about the ingredients?  Was that bacon grease splattered hamburger patty cooked on the grill with everything else made from a cow killed in the kosher custom?  Heck, some of the best hash browns I've ever had were fried in bacon grease.  What about eating at other peoples' houses who aren't Jewish?  His rantings "over there" got me wondering about this again.  And, no, I'm not going to ask him because I've asked him something before and got a rather snooty, "You aren't privy to how I..."  Yeah, dude...like you're really that important.  rolleyes

Kosher restaurants are usually certified by respected rabbinical authorities, and display the certificate in a prominent location of the restaurant.

P.S. Usually it means no pork or such is present in the kitchen at all, the meat and the milk are handled with separate utensils, and a dozen other rules are observed.

This part could be me, except for the "rich" thing.  Also, I never attended rabbinical school.  When pressed, I will claim to be Jewish as opposed to Reform Druid, but in neither case do I keep kosher, which may be the operative issue with your "Rabbi" fellow [yes, it does ring several bells.  where does he say he is from?]

So I'm wondering if your original question has anything to do with his monicker.  Most Orthodox keep kosher (don't get me started on the orthodoxy of those who have "reasons" why they do not), a goodly number of Conservatives keep kosher, and reformed are all over the map on the issue with some being more Glat Kosher than the Ultra-Orthodox.

Even Wikipedia has not enough room and enough contributors to even begin to give you a taste of the various issues that come into play regarding keeping kosher.  My two grand-aunts had separate kitchens and dining rooms with separate dinnerware, flatware, crystal and cooking utensils for milch and fliesh - and they were the sanest of the family.  My grandmother (their sister) cooked everything except coffee in bacon grease and she would have used it for the coffee if she could have figured out how to do it.

So - what wasa it you were asking about?

stay safe.

I'm sure there are a lot of places on the Internet that will provide information on kosher food.

The only direction I see this thread going is down.
