Hats banned from Yorkshire pubs over CCTV fears

Pubs in Yorkshire have been ordered to ban people from wearing flat caps or other hats so troublemakers can be more easily recognised.

The Park Hotel in Wadsley, Sheffield, is the latest to be asked to impose the rule by senior police officers.

Mark Kelly, the landlord said: "Police asked us to ensure that everyone removes headgear.

"With pensioners, by the time they sit down their hats always come off anyway because they were brought up with manners so usually take their hats off indoors."

The measure, designed to prevent people from obscuring their faces from CCTV cameras, has been questioned by Barnsley's former Test umpire Dickie Bird, 75, well-known for his favoured white flat cap.

He said: "Asking a Yorkshireman to take off his flat cap - whoever heard of anything so silly.

"It's a Yorkshire tradition, men wearing flat caps. Although youngsters don't bother these days, older men still wear them and should be allowed to continue.

"I still wear a flat cap when I go out shopping and often leave it on when I get home and end up sitting watching TV with my cap on They look smart and they keep your head nice and warm."

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said bans on people wearing headgear in public premises had been operated in banks and post offices for years.

She added: "There have been incidents both in pubs and other establishments when it has not been possible to identify offenders captured on CCTV because hats were hiding their faces."

Just because it's been done once doesn't mean it should be done again and in this case shouldn't have been done even once. Of course if the police weren't so willing to rely on the useless CCTV cameras and actually properly police the place this might not be a problem. Then you'd have to convince the judges to actually keep the criminals locked up once caught though and that might be a problem.

It would be so much easier if the lumpin proletariat would just scan their bar code tattoos into the readers as they travelled about the city

George Orwell was truly prescient, though his timing was off a tad . . .
Trump won in 2016. Democrats haven't been so offended since Republicans came along and freed their slaves.

I wish they would do that here.  You can't sit in a beer garden or pub here and not have some Mope McMope with a food blister and a monkey butt around his cheesehole sporting a baseball cap.  Who tells these goobers that they look good like this?

I would sentence them to a razor and a jump rope. grin

Language is an interesting thing.

The phrase this man used indicates that he cedes the authority to regulate his dress to the government, and is petitioning for permission to wear a hat.

"Should be allowed?"  Bite my ass.  Oldtimer, I would expect you to have more stones than that after watching England turn into what it has become.

While I agree that hats should not be worn indoors, I am affronted by this story.

Were I living there:  If there's no legislative edict and no law on the books, the bobby is politely corrected the first time.  Second time, he's told in no uncertain terms to piss off, and I get the number of his tin badge to talk with the magistrate or police captain about police enforcing non-existent laws.  If arrested over it, I fight charges with vigor and pursue civil remedies as well.
"But whether the Constitution really be one thing, or another, this much is certain - that it has either authorized such a government as we have had, or has been powerless to prevent it. In either case, it is unfit to exist."

If it goes into effect, a bunch of people ought to show up wearing burkhas.

Bet they won't ban those.

Why did we save the English from the Germans not once, but twice in the last century? They've become the enemy we beat for them.

Mopey McMope=>fat, doughy white guys who dress in shorts, hats at all times

Monkeybutt=>goatee, ring of filth around Mopey's mouth

Cheesehole=>where Mopey puts the transfats like cheese which keeps him doughy

goober=>a mouth-breathing moron with no apparent value
