Freaking amazing.  8 gold medals in a single Olympics and 7 new world records set.

I've watched very little of the Olympics so far this year, but I've been tuning in for the Phelps events.  He got a couple interviews tonight, and he continually thanks his teammates in the relay events for helping him achieve this record.

One of the members of the French relay team that the Americans beat last week really showed his stripes...

He said something to the effect of "It's too bad that experience (American team) can beat talent (French team)."

As much as he has his teammates to thank, he made sure the US won that last relay.  His leg gave Lezak a lead that he was able to keep over Sullivan.  If it wasn't for Phelps, the US probably wouldn't have won that race.  That said, Lezak is the one that made sure 8 golds was possible.  His leg in the 4x100 was absolutely phenomenal. 

Phelps is a genetic freak.  The fact that he was able to do what he's done is not surprising at all.  He won 6 in Athens and the one he lost is now one of his best events.

Congratulations to Phelps though. GB is in third on the medals table - Phelps on his own would be in 7th, ahead of Russia. Remarkable achievement.

He was upset that, as the record holder, no one invited him to Beijing.  He thought it was inappropriate for him to travel by himself and sit in the stands anonymously.  He had a very good point.  He could have made it better, though.

Mark Spitz was a tool when he set the record. He was an arrogant boob, unlike Phelps who seems to be (from the little I've seen) a fairly normal guy, and as humble as someone of his prowess could be. I was actually surprised that Spitz has been as accepting of the fall of his records as he has. As to having someone pay his way to China -- why would he expect that? It makes no sense at all ... just another example of his ego at work.
