Need help playing XSVCD files?
« on: November 05, 2005, 09:19:37 AM »
I downloaded a TV episode in XSVCD format.  Unfortuately mplayer, media player, and powerDVD all don't play it correctly.  It skips forward, and has glitches.  The File could be bad but I doubt it, my money's on some setting that is incorrect.  Any help here?

thanks,

How much RAM in your system? If less than 256mb, you may need more.

Assuming this is XP:
Rt. click My Computer>Properties>advanced tab>performance Settings>check "adjust for best performance".

WARNING/disclaimer: this WILL change your windows to look like win2K, but may fix the tv issue.  You may also need a faster graphics/video card.

Try this: http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=GSpot

It will scan the file and let you know what codecs it uses, which you can then download to properly play the file.

Also, look try this media player for your hard to play files: http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=VLC_media_player

Generally if it wont play with VLC, it wont play with anything.

doh.  still didn't work.

in the xsvcd gspot said I had the codecs, but it still flaked and skipped around.

in the second file, gspot had no idea what it was and every media player didn't work either.

i think the corrupt file people are right

Try it in VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/) or uninstall ALL of your codecs and then install the CCCP (http://cccp.kickassanime.org/download.php).  Either one of these solutions will play any file encoded with any codec, assuming it's not too corrupt.

XSVCD is a weird format, I didn't know people still released in it.  It was one of those stopgap solutions from way back in the day.
