I'm installing a small hearth stove into our large fireplace. Previously the fireplace had glass doors on the front, and the front of the fireplace is painted white, and there is some smoke staining on the white front. I'd also like to clean up the inside of the firebox to either clean brick or clean enough that I can paint it white like the rest and not have the black bleed through. So far I'm having some limited luck with TSP and a wire brush. Can anyone reccomend something that will really cut through the black? I was thinking muriatic acid perhaps, since I believe it's used to clean cement type surfaces?
