Watch those gift goodie packs...
« on: December 11, 2008, 01:45:48 PM »
Check the point of origin on the backs of the snacks and goodies in the "gift boxes of treats" that people tend to give and leave around the office, 'cause it seems the FDA isn't.

One that was just left in the office here, all sorts of the usual in attractive packages with lots of graphic design trendiness. The usual, sausage, olives, cookies...

...and "strawberry cashew milk treats" in a box that looked like a Godiva box, containing milk powder, made before the melamine recall, MADE IN CHINA.

Check the ingredients on those things, especially storebought ones. They're cheap for a reason. Go FDA!

Isn't melamine, you know, absurdly poisonous?

It'll screw up your kidneys. It's used to adulterate milk because it makes the protein content appear higher when tested.

How lovely. My kidneys, already being damaged by antibiotics (thanks, allergies), would hate that stuff.

Why should the FDA spend my tax money testing free food when they have... you... to do it for them?

FDA 1. "How's he doing?"

FDA 2. "Well, he ate the entire box of Strawberry Melamine Yumyums. Now he's thrashing around on the floor vomiting what looks to be his spleen."

FDA 1. "Hum... Better cut the serving size from half a box to a quarter box."

? You are taking anti-biotics for allergies? Sorry to snoop. That doesn't make any sense to me.

I'm guessing he was given an antibiotic to which he was allergic, which did a number on his kidneys.

I'd just rather not have crap in food that can kill or injure you. Especially imports, which is REALLY easy for them to interdict.

They seem more interested in nailing someone for supplying their neighbors with (gasp) unpasteurized whole milk, rather than stopping blatantly adulterated food items from coming in through our ports and ending up on shelves.

Either have an FDA, or don't. Do the job, or total caveat emptor, which would encourage local businesses and farms. But don't give people a false sense of security and then let them eat crap you know is coming in. At least just say "We can't watch it all, you need to read labels and don't be blindly trusting, demand to know what is in things yourself."

And I hate government bureaucrats. I'd be defenestrating people in less than a day. :P

Ah, you've just provided us with yet another reason why you should be hired to do the job =D.

Yep. Damn near killed me, too. Nerve damage, kidney problems, potassium problems, adrenal glands near destroyed. Real fun.  =(

Ok, so it's unanimous.

Manedwolf for the next head of the FDA.

Grandpa Shooter for the next Secretary of Defense.

(BTW, my supposed conversations with Blagojevich over the upcoming Ministry of Snark position never happened...)   =D

Need an assistant or maybe just someone to hold the window open for you ??
Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.
