Looks Like Obama Gets His Blackberry

A supposedly secure Smartphone. It'll be interesting how it pans out from a security standpoint, and if the FOIA requests start to fly.

Obama to get spy-proof smartphone

(CNN) -- Self-confessed BlackBerry addict President Barack Obama may not have to kick the thumbing habit after all, despite the concerns of a notoriously technophobic White House.
Obama was a self-confessed BlackBerry addict during his White House campaign.

Obama was a self-confessed BlackBerry addict during his White House campaign.

"The president has a BlackBerry," White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said Thursday, clearing up weeks of speculation about whether President Obama would be able to hold on to a cherished method of communicating.

The decision to allow Obama to keep a smartphone is "a compromise that allows him to stay in touch with senior staff and a small group of personal friends," Gibbs told the media in his first press conference since the inauguration.

"Use will be limited and the security is enhanced to ensure his ability to communicate but to do so effectively," Gibbs also said. "And to do so in a way that is protected."

The press secretary refused to provide more details about the new president's device, already being called the "BarackBerry." Video Watch CNN's Errol Barnett reports on the president's new phone »

Obama was often seen hunched over the mobile e-mail cell phone device during his election campaign and even featured at No. 2 on one celebrity Web site's list of obsessive BlackBerry users.

But, like previous Oval Office incumbents, Obama had been expected to take a vow of technological celibacy following his inaugural oath on Tuesday, despite telling CNBC in an interview that security officials would have to "pry it out of my hands." He said a mobile device would help him stay in touch with the real world. Should President Obama be allowed to keep his BlackBerry? Tell us what you think

E-mail has long been treated with suspicion by the Secret Service because of fears it could be hacked into by foreign espionage agencies, or that sensitive information could reach the public domain via a single mistaken strike of the "send" key.

President George W. Bush was forced to give up using e-mail when he took charge, while President Bill Clinton sent just two e-mails during his administration -- one to test that the system worked and the second to veteran astronaut John Glenn before his trip into space in 1998.

    * Commentary: Obama should keep that BlackBerry

There are also concerns that mobile devices such as the BlackBerry, which contain built-in GPS technology, could be hacked, revealing the president's location within a few feet.

But according to reports Thursday, Obama may actually have been issued a spy-proof alternative to his favorite toy.

Writing on his blog for the Atlantic magazine, Marc Ambinder reports that the National Security Agency has approved a $3,350 smartphone -- inevitably dubbed the "BarackBerry" -- for Obama's use.

The exclusive Sectera Edge, made by General Dynamics, is reportedly capable of encrypting top secret voice conversations and handling classified documents.

But Obama may have pushed his Secret Service handlers' technological patience far enough. Ambinder also reports that instant messaging in the White House will still be a definite no-no.

Presidential Records shouldn't be a problem; as usually these types of things piggyback off of an existing email system.  As long as that email system is compliant, the device should be, too.

A "regular" blackberry could probably be secured to some level, but probably not to the "super seekret PRESIDENT level thats' required.  As long as the encryption is strong enough, and he's not a moron about his passwords, it shouldn't be an issue.

Even if he loses it, those devices can be remotely wiped.

I used to manage blackberries for a very security minded company; and I had them configured to wipe themselves if they weren't used within a 24 hour period.

It can be done reasonably, assuming everyone is smart about it.

Then again, this is the federal government.

EDIT: Reading another thread, I see the realities of government networks are a lot more complicated than I'd guess; so yes, that can have a lot to do with it as wel.

Gee, if he's stuck with his nickname, it would've been a "Barry-Berry".

They are, but if he wants to use it for what I thought his original purpose was (emails, internet surfing, etc) it's not like it would be on SIPRNet (Revdisk or somebody may correct me) so they would have to use other network security and encryption means for him to access "the world". And the Secret Service has a point about "one slip on the keyboard and an email goes to the wrong person". Though it could be they'll control his address book somewhat.

Anyway, it'll be interesting to see if he starts a trend that sticks with other Presidents regarding Internet presence, or he ends up giving it up because of the hassle.

What exactly does he need a blackberry for?

I just don't see it.  Is he that addicted to myspace[TM]?  Needing to use the Wiki?  It doesn't seem like he would need it for the usual business things:  Professional contacts, appointment reminders, directions, ect.  He has a whole slew of people following him around like rabid dogs foaming that information and advice.

You don't even want to know what a mess they are.  The "official" DMS runs on a fifteen year old email system.  There are smaller, fragmented systems that sort of inter-operate at various levels.  I can see how a blackberry would work with DMS, but I wouldn't want to be the poor schmuck who had to run the system.

I bet the hackers are already lining up to take a shot.....
Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Bring me my Broadsword and a clear understanding.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.

Oh, hell yes. There's probably already everything from broken-down firmware to whitepapers from disgruntled rim employees flying back and forth already.

In China, too. Where they made the chips, don't they?

Ever wonder how many backdoors are hardwired into the millions of lines of code on device chips?

What?  Is it that obvious that any technical infosec discussion will draw me like a Congresscritter to your paycheck?

Due to legal reasons, President Obama cannot use official government equipment for personal purposes.  Sorta.  Sending an email to the wife that you're going to be late is ok.   Sending an email to your campaign contributors or discussing re-election strategies, not so much.   Blackberries are fairly secure design wise.  They're approved for FOUO communication by the US military.  AFAIK, no production blackberry is certified for any classified material.  The US Army and DISA have contracted a Blackberry bluetooth CAC reader, but I am unaware of it being used to allow classified material on production Blackberries.

Disclaimer:  I no longer work for DISA or the US Army.  I am not personally familiar with the current status of classified mobile devices being used or developed by either.

If you run your own blackberry enterprise server (BES), RIM can't read the traffic.  Yes, it does pass through the hands of a Canadian company, but they don't have the necessary keys to decrypt your email traffic.  Imagine an encrypted tunnel for the following chain:  Your device (encrypted) -> carrier (AT&T, Verizon, etc) -> RIM -> BES server (decrypted) -> internal email server or internet (typically unencrypted).  Your BES administrator can encrypt the tunnel with either 3DES or AES.  If your BES admin is still using 3DES, he should be beaten.  Severely.  It's secure enough for the President to send non-sensitive emails to family and personal friends.  It is NOT any more voice secure than any other cell phone.  Additionally, anyone within the same cell tower radius can track the location and usage if they know the IMEI number of the device.

It is possible to create a white list of acceptable addresses through BES.  It's a friggin pain in the neck, and I'm not familiar with anyone actually doing so.  The only exception I've seen are blackberries locked down to only email other people in the same organizational unit (ie, can only email other people within the company).

For official purposes, the POTUS can and likely will use a Sectéra Edge, another fine product from General Dynamics. (OEM link  The "reportedly capable" meantioned in the article is just media BS.  The NSA has an article about the project on their Information Assurance website.  Link  The Sectera Edge is currently certified by the NSA for TS (non-SCI) voice commo, and SIPR email/web (ie, SECRET only, no TS emails).   The SE is actually compliant with TACLANE KG-175 encryptors and is a Type 1 endorsed device, as required for any remote SIPRnet access.

Yes...yes it is.  :P

Thanks for the good info. I was unaware the TACLANE stuff was okay for TS. I see some of the Coasties next door to my work using that hardware on their laptops, but they mostly deal with LE sensitive and SECRET (at least AFAIK).

It's not.  TACLANE is ok for SIPRnet, which is SECRET.   HAIPE and such is for TS, which is JWICS and such.
