Any .mil sorts...peanut recall extends to MREs
« on: January 31, 2009, 12:32:47 AM »
Lovely...

Quote
12 Meals    SOPAKCO, Inc    1 oz. or 2 oz. packages of peanut butter    8261, 8278, 8285, 8287, 8294, 8320, 8322, 8330, 8350, 8357, 8358, 9003, 9012

Since they're a military contractor and the peanut butter squeeze packs are the exact same in all of their MRE products, that means that the peanut butter in the issue stuff is likely also contaminated. ANY peanut products made from peanuts from the last two years by that company, now.

If you know anyone who is deployed, you might want to tell them to skip the peanut butter...pick up some local tahini with date for PB&J? Safer. Ironic.

Any ideas if this will become a separate investigation from the criminal investigation now going on?  Seems there are charges & accusations that they knew about this for an extended period of time but continuded on their merry way anyhow.

stay safe.

Awww, nuts. =D

I bought a few cases from SOPAKCO over the summer!  I guess I better check them. :O

It doesn't make much of a difference because anything made recently probably wouldn't make it to any units until at least 2012.

Can anyone give me the low down on what the heck is going on with this peanuts recall?

Can anyone give me the low down on what the heck is going on with this peanuts recall?

The company did Very Bad Things with thousands of tons of chopped processed peanuts as well as other peanut products, and the FDA completely dropped the ball.

A truck of their product was rejected from Canada and then rejected coming back in to the US because the peanuts contained a "foul substance" and were unfit for human consumption, but the FDA mishandled it all and it sort of vanished. The company knew they had salmonella issues a while ago but kept shipping product.

Hundreds of people have gotten sick, a few people died, and everything that used their chopped peanuts and peanut butter, from vending-machine peanut butter crackers to boutique bars like Larabar and Balance and all those, peanut butter cookies in supermarkets, store brands of peanut butter that may have been produced by them, and institutional peanut butter have all been recalled. Millions of pounds of it.

It is expanding every day. Best advice is to avoid peanutbutter flavored products altogether, or only get local peanut butter definitely sourced from independently grown and locally shelled peanuts. I've taken to going to the healthy foods store, where they have the organic peanuts with their source marked that you can have made into peanut butter right there by their machine. :/

I wonder about my Girl Scout cookie order now...

According to Little Brownie Bakers, which makes them for GS, they're not included in the recall.

Looks like anything with peanut is best appraised on a box by box basis. Fun times. I didn't think Clif Bars would be affected, but they most certainly are. I'm supposed to bring the big box of Peanut Butter and Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter ones back to Costco for a full refund, they're contaminated. :P

Oh, press release.

NEW YORK, N.Y. —Neither of the two licensed bakers affiliated with Girl Scout® Cookies, ABC Interbake or Little Brownie Bakers, source their peanut butter from the supplier involved in the current peanut butter warning.

All ingredients used in Girl Scout Cookies are regularly inspected to ensure they are safe for consumption.

FDA and other regulatory agencies have indicated that Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) is the focus of their investigation concerning a recent Salmonella outbreak thought to be caused by tainted peanut butter. PCA does not supply peanut butter used in any variety of Girl Scout® cookies.

http://www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopics/salmonellatyph.html

Looks like Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) at its Blakely, Georgia processing plant messed up pretty bad.  I know the CDC works with the FDA on a not irregular basis, but you know you're in a bad way if the FDA and CDC trace several deaths to your door.   Looks like the recall is January 1, 2007 to present.  Ouch.

The list of recalled products is ...  amazingly long.  Seems to be mostly industrial products, no one has listed consumer peanut butter brands you're likely to find at a supermarket.  Peanut butter flavored products seem like more of a direct risk than straight peanut butter.

This may sound like a dumb question.  Of the hundred odd plus folks doing a recall, I'm gathering none actually do QA of the raw goods they're using in their finished products?   I'm kinda lost on that.  Most places I worked checked our materials in addition to our finished product.

But that's what the FDA is for!!!    =|

By the sounds of it, while the stuff was contaminated, much of it wasn't obviously contaminated.

As for the company, well, I support the same sentencing structure as China enforced over the melamine milk incident.

Salmonella probably wouldn't kill you if you were healthy, but it might make you wish it had.
