This is part of what keeps me away from Linux... I used to love the stuff.

But the distro inspecific tools that change from flavor to flavor annoy me.  Where did gksudo come from?  Is this a special version of sudo that allows a GUI/X based application to launch from a sudo command line?

I finally said "Screw-ee the GUI" and learned how to edit the configuration files manually.  Doesn't much matter which distro I use, nowadays.

Life is simpler & easier since I dumped the various administrative GUIs.

Yeah... I learned that trick too when bouncing from Red Hat to SuSE to Mandrake to Debian.

Distro-specific config programs suck.  So does Ximian.  Although I have to admit Evolution was kinda cool.  If only it integrated calendar/task stuff with all the groupware servers... Domino/Notes, Groupwise, Exchange.

I am thinking hard about making my next desktop a Linux box when I rebuild it... an obligatory thing for me every 18 months or so.

Aside from using VMWare, what are my options for getting MS SQL 2005 to run on Linux?

I installed 8.04 desktop version on my homebuilt PC that's a couple years old. Athlon64 3500, 1 gig ram, don't remember what motherboard but I'm using the onboard video. I can get more details tonight if it's still giving me trouble.

Well I got it working. I was able to revert to the old drivers then I used displayconfig-gtk to set the resolution. I think the problem was I had to select an appropriate monitor, it just had a generic listed. Anyway it's fixed now so I'm off to download ZoneMinder to play with it. Thanks for the help.

It's a GTK tool that pops up a nice pretty GUI window for you to put your password in. That's all. There is also kdesudo.

is there an alt-tab to switch between desktops in Gnome?

Maybe you can set up shortcuts as described...but I like to just keep virtual XP on one face of my desktop cube and then I can rotate to my other desktops with ctrl+alt+arrows:

But it's true that if your keys are bound to the XP at the moment, anything you do happens in XPland.
Maybe a rare occurence, but then you only have to get murdered once to ruin your whole day.
