First Day of Calif State Worker Furloughs

Today was the first day that CA state workers had to take the day off without pay. They have to take every other Friday off through 2010.

An interesting quote from the linked story:

Critical services such as state fire stations and centers that process unemployment insurance claims remained open, as well as state parks.

Since when is the unemployment office (or a state park for that matter) a critical service?

I wonder if the people working those furlough Fridays will be paid a double wage for that shift, for doing the jobs of the people who aren't there?
