Happy ending after boy's bike is stolen

Phoenix police officers lifted the spirits of a 9-year-old boy and his family after buying the boy a new bike to replace the one stolen from the home Monday morning.

The family had gone to Texas for a funeral and returned home in central Phoenix Monday morning. They found their three-bedroom home had been ransacked.

Thieves had nabbed a television, sound system and Pedro's bike, which was a Christmas gift from his parents. The break-in was not the first for the family.

The family did not own a phone, so they went to a neighbor's house to call authorities.

Phoenix Police arrived on the scene a short time later and saw how upset Pedro was about the loss of his bike.

"We saw how crushed he was about the bike," Phoenix police officer Pete Borquez said. "So we decided to go over to Walmart and buy him a new one. We knew his mom and dad wouldn't be able to get him a new bike for awhile."

Borquez and fellow officer Mustafa Masad each paid half for the bike, Masad said.

While riding around his brand new bike, a grey Huffy with red trim, 9-year-old Pedro Gonzalez said, "Next thing I know, I saw a cop car pull up and they gave me a bike.

"I said thank you."

Pedro and his 7-year-old sister Jacklyn rode up and down the street laughing and smiling,

Pedro's mother, Lucilla Gonzalez, said she was grateful. "It's not about the bike, it's that they care," Lucilla said.

Lucilla and her family moved into the house last August after losing their previous home due to high mortgage payments.

"We can't afford a phone, let alone an alarm system," Lucilla said.
