Simpsons set to become longest running prime-time TV show

Think about it...

Bart would be in his 30s now...

LOS ANGELES – Fox says it's renewing "The Simpsons" for another two seasons, which will secure its place as TV's longest-running prime-time series.

Now in its 20th season, "The Simpsons" already had tied record-holder "Gunsmoke." The Western drama series aired for two decades on CBS before it ended in 1975.

"The Simpsons" will pass that mark next season. The two-year, 44-episode pickup announced Thursday by Fox will bring the total number of "Simpsons" episodes to 493.

The animated comedy about Homer and Marge Simpson, their children and the town of Springfield is not only enduring but much-honored: It's received a Peabody and 24 Emmys among other awards.

And Futurama was still much funnier.

Very true but since it was set in the future I believe that made it a niche show for sci-fi lovers.

Futurama was as good as the Simpsons was in the beginning.

Only the Simpsons was FAR edgier.

Had Futurama survived past its first few seasons, it undoubtedly would have suffered a serious decline as has happened with Simpsons.

I agree with both Mike and Manedwolf. I think Futurama was more consistently funny, but then it never got the chance to become stale. Futurama to me is as good as the best Simpsons episodes, sometimes better.

Eh, I think Futurama is usually funny, but the best Simpsons episodes far outclass the best Futurama episodes.

Even the "Slurm" episode can't come close to the "Bart's Gay" episode. (And that's just off the top of my head)
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

Hehe, that was a good one, yeah! I'll admit that I may be biased towards Futuram because I like the Futuristic setting more.

Futurama could also be strikingly poignant in a way that Simpsons never could be.

Two examples are where Fry finds his fossilized dog. The closing scenes about the dog waiting vainly for Fry to come home just kill me.

Then there's the one where Leela is stung by the Space Bee and keeps dreaming weird dreams as she's in a coma. When she wakes up she finds that Fry had been with her the whole time.

The episode where Fry ends up at the grave of what ends up being his nephew is good in that way, too.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that one. That one is actually one of my favorite episodes.

And, I can also identify with Fry's "quest for the unreachable woman."

Fry and the dog he left behind have so much in common....
