How do I get a website?
« on: March 10, 2009, 07:38:14 PM »
I'm pretty dumb when it comes to computer networking. Really I am.

I want a website. Kind of like a blog, but mostly as a repository of random personal stuff...photos, essays, useful information others would be interested in, bloggy stuff, I could put my resume on there....it's just high time I had my own website.

So, how do you get your own website? What issues are involved? How expensive is it? You need to host your website on a server that is on 24/7; I understand that. How do you do that?

I'm ok with making very basic HTML webpages, but maybe there is a better way.
Maybe a rare occurence, but then you only have to get murdered once to ruin your whole day.

Well, except for the complete absence of a toll-free telephone number.

It sounds more or less like what you want is a blog of some type.  You can get blog-only accounts from (for instance) blogger.com for free.  If you want more flexibility for things like photos and stuff, something like LiveJournal or MySpace or Facebook may give you the facilities that you require, although they do carry with them a certain stigma in a professional sense (hosting your resume on MySpace, for instance, may not make a good impression, depending upon the employer).  Things like this are free for basic accounts, and you can pay a nominal fee for certain gee-whiz features.

If you want freeform web space, then Charby's suggestion is what I would have suggested.  I use GoDaddy for domain registration and name services, but I don't use their hosting only because I need pretty fine-grained control over the web services I offer, and it's simpler for me to just have a server in my home.

Of note:  If you register a domain name with GoDaddy (for ~$10/year) I believe they give you webhosting space of at least a gig or so for that domain for free.

Word to the wise:  Be careful of what you put up on any site; things that you wrote long ago and have forgotten all about can and will come back to haunt you.  I regularly googlestalk applicants for jobs at my company, and we have passed over people as candidates before because of things that they've posted in MySpace et al.

SW:  Not having a toll-free number for support is actually pretty clever, IMHO; it means that, instead of charging an arm and a leg for their service because every punter too impatient to RTFM will call their helldesk and clog it up for hours asking questions like "So whut's this here Aitch Tee Ehm Ayell?" because it's free, GoDaddy can keep prices down because people will think twice about calling for help if it costs.  Also, many cell plans (and some landline plans, like mine) have nationwide long distance for free.  Even counting in toll call charges, it may still be cheaper to use GoDaddy than some other services; depends upon how often you have to call the helldesk, and for how long.

Seek out wisdom in books, rare manuscripts, and cryptic poems if you will, but seek it also in simple stones and fragile herbs and in the cries of wild birds. Listen to the song of the wind and the roar of water if you would discover magic, for it is here that the old secrets are still preserved.

Many ISPs offer some sort of web space with your account.  Verizon, my ISP, gives me 10mb with my DSL account.  It isn't much, but it's enough to hosts pics for forums like this and such.  No reason why you couldn't host a blog or journal there.

Or, if you have a decent broadband connection, you can run a web server on your home network and use port forwarding on your broadband router to forward port 80 requests to your server.  I do that as well to host pics for my family.  You can use a service like dyndns.org to get a free domain name or you can buy one and point it to your public IP.

Lots of options...
