Mass. seniors tell board: Let us eat doughnuts
8 hours ago

ASHBURNHAM, Mass. (AP) — Senior citizens in a Massachusetts community are telling a town official to keep his hands off their doughnuts.

Francis "Bill" Johnson is chairman of the advisory board in Ashburnham, a 90-minute drive northwest of Boston. He said at a Council on Aging meeting this week that spending money on doughnuts and pastries for the local Senior Center's morning coffee club encourages unhealthy eating habits in a population that already has health issues.

Council on Aging board member Lorna Fields says Johnson has "overstepped his boundaries." She says that many seniors won't eat "carrot sticks and stuff" and that healthier items such as grapes and cheese are available.

A cream-filled doughnut covered with sprinkles has about 350 calories.

But 67-year-old Senior Center regular Betty Bushee tells The Telegram & Gazette of Worcester (WUS'-tur) that no one has the right to tell seniors what to eat.

But, but those donuts could take years off those peoples' lives!

Oh, wait...

Stupid bureaucrats. How's that go? Tree. Rope. Some assembly required.

Meh, this fails to trip my outrage-o-meter. Some annoying busybody proposed taking away some geezers doughnuts, and got shut down. Big deal. I could maybe, if I tried real hard, care if the .gov was paying for the doughnuts, but again if that's how the local .gov wants to spend it's money so be it.

If donuts can get senior citizens (in the interest of full disclosure, I are one.  Gimme my discount!) off their backsides, out into the fresh air for over 30 seconds, and into a socializing setting, then it is a Good ThingTM.

Francis "Bill" Johnson ought to be congratulated for figuring out how to get a bunch of old pharts to participate in aerobic exercise as well as demonstrate the proper way to seek redress from the outrageous depredations of the minions of their government.

When I was but a mere teen the nursing home in town opened a "lounge" - residents had to get out of bed, get washed & dressed, and haul themselves under their own power (except for the truely immobile who had to get a push from some other resident) in order partake of the two free drinks per day that were being served.  Health went up, longevity increased, and in spite of the fears of several selectmen no unwanted pregnancies resulted.  (Yes, the #^%% busybodies were afraid the old geezers were going to be playing tickle-tag in the corners if a loquor license was granted. ;/)

I did some volunteer stuff there, and it was a hoot when some 95+-year old was trying to slip me (16 at the time) a couple of bucks to bring back a bottle.  Lost that pocket change when the lounge opened.

stay safe.

soon, government health care will want people to die off quickly to save money. at that time, they will likely encourage the consumption of (or even provide) gooey donuts.

...and it would be okay with me, as i wouldn't want to live in that society anyway

I never considered the idea of being outraged really, just thought I'd present another example of .gov tomfoolery for laughing purposes. What they ought to do is come to my local range on match night and try to take THOSE donuts away, cause we really ARE armed, every damn one of us.
