My dislike for government at all levels is nothing new, but it was really brought to the fore this morning.
I attended the formal opening & dedication of my town's new fire house. This edifice has been 12 YEARS in planning and construction, and cost approximately 20 MILLION dollars. In addition to being designed by a supposedly qualified architectural firm, there was a well-respected architect on the building committee, and multiple layers of building inspection to supposedly assure code compliance. So what did we get?
The building doesn't comply with either the ADA or the building code. First problem -- the handicapped grab rails in the toilet rooms aren't mounted in the right locations. Okay, that's comparatively minor. They can be relocated, although doing so will leave holes in brand new concrete block and ceramic tile walls.
The bigger problem is that the rear fire exit stair from the second floor training room doesn't comply with the building code. And it's an interior stair, located right in the middle of the building. There's no way it can be made larger at this point, which means there's simply no way it can be made compliant. And I live in a self-styled "enlightened" community, where people say they are concerned about things like accessibility for the handicapped.
God help us.
The worst part is ... I'm paying for this mess with my tax dollars.
