Lights In Sky Prompt Flood Of Calls In Md., Va., N.C.

Lights In Sky Prompt  The National Weather Service said Monday there is no evidence of any naturally occurring phenomenon to explain bright lights in the eastern sky that prompted hundreds of calls to the service and emergency officials.

Callers from Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina described brilliant, streaking lights followed by an explosion-like sound at about 9:45 p.m. Sunday.

One 11 News viewer in Carroll County e-mailed to say she "spotted a large fireball in the western sky. It started out being about star brightness, then increasingly got brighter and greener. As it got green, it had an orange sparkling tail...We saw it go almost all the way to the ground before losing sight of it in the trees."

A WBALTV.com visitor who was in Durham, N.C., wrote the following: "I remember seeing something greenish and changing colors. It was leaving a trail (not sure of the color). I never saw it hit the ground either because it faded, got covered by trees, or burnt out."

Another wrote: "I was driving South on Interstate 83 between 9:30 and 10:00 (Sunday) night when my wife and I both saw a streaking green light fall from the sky. It looked like a shooting star, but it was definitely falling to the ground and not shooting across the sky."

Virginia residents from Hampton Roads to Richmond reported seeing "great balls of fire" lighting up the sky in shades of yellow, white orange and blue.

Some described the explosion as sounding like thunder.

Several calls came to Richmond International Airport, but spokesman Troy Bell said tower workers did not see anything unusual.

A spokesman for the weather service said the lights are "nothing meteorological that we can see."

The weather service said no damage was reported.

OTOH, there wouldn't be a tweeker left in Georgia...

Obviously the martians have been waiting for a sign of weakness and decided to act now that Barack Obama is in charge.

I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

Just rocks falling from the sky.

I was up about 3AM one morning back in college in Tacoma, walking around.  The sky was actually clear on this particular night.  I got the most amazing light show from the sky.  I thought the ISS or a shuttle had blown up... it was the only possible explanation for the streaking masses of stars I had seen.

Amazing display, but it was just a meteor shower.  Probably a big one that shattered into a fountain of smaller ones.  It quite literally looked like a Roman Candle being pointed with our planet as the recipient.  This was around 1998-99, I think, sometime in the winter.

Ha!!!

I saw that hunka-hunka burnin' stone last night.  It was a long-lasting "shooting star" that broke into several pieces.

We were over Maryland, I think.  That was one of the brighter meteors that I've seen.  Didn't hear anything though.   :|

anyway, we now know we cant trust fly320, in all his pictures he is wearing clothes.

I was lucky enough to see a couple of large bolides over the years.

Your sense of scale/distance is really warped. It often looks a lot closer than it is.
I promise not to duck.

I, for one, welcome our new alien overloards !!!

(I mean, come on, can they be any worse the human overlords we currently have ??)

Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,

What's that from?  Very familiar.

What's that from?  Very familiar.

The original Simpsons quote (from Deep Space Homer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_Space_Homer ) in context:

News announcer Kent Brockman mistakes a floating ant in a space shuttle experiment floating close to the camera for a giant space ant:

"Ladies and gentlemen, uh, we've just lost the picture, but what we've seen speaks for itself. The Corvair spacecraft has apparently been taken over -- 'conquered' if you will -- by a master race of giant space ants. It's difficult to tell from this vantage point whether they will consume the captive earth men or merely enslave them. One thing is for certain: there is no stopping them; the ants will soon be here. And I for one welcome our new insect overlords. I'd like to remind them that as a trusted TV personality, I can be helpful in rounding up others to toil in their underground sugar caves."

Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.
